Imran Khan Planning PM Modi-Style Oath? Decision Soon, Says Official

Elections agency says Imran Khan won Pakistan's election, but needs a coalition

Later that month, after Modi made a surprise visit to Lahore to meet the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Imran though welcomed the development but also termed the meeting as a "conflict of interest".

Khan on Monday said he will take oath as prime minister on August 11, even as his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party was striving to get the required numbers to form a government. Meanwhile, Khan also took his party leaders in confidence about government formation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa where the PTI has won a majority of seats and will easily form the government.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, leader of Pakistan Peoples Party, rejected the election process claiming it was not free and fair.

But it's unclear whether they have the political will or the seats to prevent Khan - a former cricket star who is believed to be backed by the military - from becoming the next prime minister.

At least four Pakistani political parties said Monday they will join hands against the "stolen mandate" of Imran Khan, whose party won the most votes in an election marred by allegations of fraud.

The former World Cup winning cricketer, 65, was announced the victor of Pakistan's general election on Friday despite a delayed vote count provoking accusations of rigging.

The latest Election Commission of Pakistan official partial results showed Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), or Pakistan Movement for Justice party, had won 115 seats out of the 268 seats counted.

The move, if it takes place, will be a replication of what PM Modi did in 2014 when leaders of all SAARC nations were invited to India including then Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif who attended the oath-taking ceremony in New Delhi. Thanking Modi for his wishes, Imran Khan said that the disputes between the two nations must be settled with dialogue.

Beyond forming a government, Khan's most pressing concern is addressing Pakistan's rapidly deteriorating finances and many investors and analysts expect a bailout from China or the International Monetary Fund is inevitable.

But analysts say that many Pakistani politicians are corrupt and that the security services selectively targeted Sharif, his family and some of his allies because their leaders had found Sharif hard to work with.

The relations between India and Pakistan remained tense since 2014.

During his victory speech on Thursday Khan said: "We want to work in every possible way to ensure peace in Afghanistan".

He was a fierce critic of the USA war on terror, particularly the country's use of drone strikes in Pakistan, which targeted terrorist networks but also killed Pakistani civilians.
