Mesut Ozil named in Arsenal squad for Singapore tour

Mesut Ozil

The 29-year-old Spaniard is more likely to be sold as the Perez has just returned to the club after a season on loan with Deportivo La Coruna and there is no obvious place in the Arsenal squad for the left winger. "That is not why I play football, and I will not sit back and do nothing about it. Racism should never, ever be accepted". Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, capped 81 times by England, laconically tweeted his support for the Arsenal player, with the word "Respect" quoting a tweet of Ozil's statement.

"I have two hearts, one German and one Turkish", said Ozil, who was repeatedly singled out for criticism after Germany's woeful performance at the World Cup saw them crash out after the group stages.

Ozil announced his retirement from the German national football team on Sunday citing "discrimination and racism".

Germany's first game after the World Cup debacle is against newly-crowned world champions France in the new Nations League tournament on September 6 in Munich.

Asked if Ozil would be missed, Matthaus told ESPN FC: "No, we have a lot of good players, and when some player cannot perform like before, we have option to give the new generation the chance to help us to make the results like, for example, 2014". "I congratulate Mesut Ozil who by leaving the national team has scored the most attractive goal against the virus of fascism", Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul wrote on Twitter.

Ozalan, born in 1972, has represented Turkey 87 times in the national team, making him the country's sixth-most capped player of all time.

"The chancellor values Mesut Ozil highly".

While not wanting to make public comment on some of Ozil's statements from his Twitter post, the governing body said it "emphatically" rejected any suggestions of racism within the organisation.

"It is with a heavy heart and after much consideration that because of recent events, I will no longer be playing for Germany at worldwide level while I have this feeling of racism and disrespect", the player said.

Ozil, a key member of the squad which won the 2014 World Cup, blamed the DFB management, in particular its president Reinhard Grindel, for failing to side with him against his critics.

He pointed out that Erdogan also met the Queen and Prime Minister Theresa May while in England and said he would have been "disrespecting his ancestors' roots" had he not posed for photographs with the Turkish president. Ozil has insisted that "it wasn't about politics or elections, it was about me respecting the highest office of my family's country".

Fellow players have their say.
