MLB Rumors: Cubs Acquire Pitcher Cole Hamels In Trade With Rangers

The Rangers traded left-hander Cole Hamels to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday for prospects

Hamels carried a 3.61 ERA at the end of June, before a rough July (1-3, 11.12 ERA) sent his ERA climbing and his price dropping.

Hamels also has to be more reliable than Yu Darvish, who's slowly rebooting his rehab process and looking more like a September call-up than a pitcher the Cubs are actually counting on this year.

In 2015, Hamels threw a no-hitter against the Cubs on July 25th at Wrigley Field.

Hamels is making $23.5 million this season and has a $6 million buyout (or $20 million team option) for 2019, but the Cubs will reportedly only have to pay $5 million of Hamels' remaining contract. On Thursday, days out from another trade deadline, the Chicago Cubs brought Hamels back to Wrigley - where they will lean on the veteran lefty to help lock down the National League Central title and carry them deep into October. He's a great competitor, got good stuff. It was his last start for the Phillies before being dealt to the Rangers.

With Hamels in tow, the Cubs could also opt to move Chatwood into the bullpen in an attempt to get his mechanics smoothed out. He is 1-7 with a 6.41 ERA and an opponents' OPS of.911 at the Rangers' hitter-friendly Globe Life Park - and has an extensive postseason pedigree. He competes and knows what he is doing out there.

It appears the Cubs will once again look to the Rangers for pitching help.

Hamels has pitched some big games against Joe Maddon's teams, including the 2008 World Series against Maddon's Tampa Bay Rays in which the southpaw allowed only 4 runs in 13 innings across 2 starts. Lacy, an 11th-round pick in last year's draft out of Creighton, was assigned to Class A Down East. Butler is 1-1 with a 4.08 ERA in eight appearances this year.
