Raab hits out at 'irresponsible' EU ahead of fresh Brexit talks

British voters EU

The European Commission published on Thursday (19 July) a 17-page communication to businesses in the EU warning them of the consequences of a "no deal" Brexit if the United Kingdom crashes out of the bloc next March.

Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran, a supporter of the Best for Britain campaign for a second referendum, said: "The Prime Minister has shown how wafer-thin her confidence in the new DExEU minister is, launching a desperate attempt to take back control, two years late".

"We will also discuss the UK's exit from the EU".

The paper also provides for the UK's continued participation in the EMA with the United Kingdom becoming an active participant that contributes financially (but has no voting powers) and United Kingdom regulators acting as a "leading authority" for the assessment of new products.

Only 16% of voters support Theresa May and consider she is doing well with Brexit compared to 34%, according to which Johnson will do a better job.

"We warned at the time that it wouldn't work, and that it would need to be rubbed out - here's the proof", he told the House of Commons.

Raab also said the government is not bluffing when it says that crashing out of the European Union with no deal would be better than a bad deal.

Prime Minister Theresa May agreed in December to a financial settlement totalling £35 to £39 billion ($46-51 billion, 39-44 billion euros) that ministers said depended on agreeing future trade ties.

The ministry led by Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, ostensibly the public face of the negotiations, will instead focus on domestic preparations for Brexit, including the risk of reaching no deal.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said the United Kingdom will not "blink" in Brexit negotiations, as he warned the European Union it risks forcing the country to crash out of the bloc with no deal.

"You can't have one side fulfilling its side of the bargain and the other side not, or going slow, or failing to commit on its side".

Civil servants working on the negotiations will be brought together in the Cabinet Office Europe Unit headed by Olly Robbins - who reports direct to the Prime Minister - while Mr Raab's Department for Exiting the European Union will focus on preparations for life after Brexit.

"And we also know that for that we have to make steps toward each other", he said, adding that the EU's collective interests had to be defended.

Initially announced last November, the Bill will create a new financial authority to manage payments to the European Union over the years after Brexit.

Challenged about the prospect of a "no-deal" outcome, Mr Raab said that while there would be "uncertainty" in the short-term "I think long-term actually we would still be able to thrive". He noted that 80% of the withdrawal agreement was already settled.
