Republicans seek to impeach US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein

Rod Rosenstein

"It's time to find a new Deputy Attorney General who is serious about accountability and transparency", Meadows said in a statement. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), along with 9 cosponsors, introduced articles of impeachment against Rosenstein shortly after a meeting with Justice Department officials concerning document production.

The lawmakers accused Rosenstein of committing "high crimes and misdemeanors", including the failure to comply with congressional subpoenas, intentionally withholding redacted information and documents Congress members have the constitutional right to see, and abusing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

Wednesday's resolution had nine cosponsors, though notably not conservative House leadership such as Trey Gowdy, chair of the Oversight Committee, and Bob Goodlatte, chair of the Judiciary Committee.

The 36-year-old freshman from Fort Walton Beach has been a leading critic of the Russian Federation probe - the "Mueller witch hunt" as he calls it - and asserts, among other things, that the government installed a spy in the Trump campaign, a conclusion disputed by Florida's top Republican in Washington, Sen.

They accuse Rosenstein of failing to provide information to House committees, even though the Justice Department has already provided more than 800,000 documents.

The other Republicans introducing the articles of impeachment are Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona, Rep. Jody Hice of Georgia, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida and Rep. Scott DesJarlais of Tennessee.

"The DOJ is keeping information from Congress", Jordan said, referring to the Department of Justice.

"This resolution to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein is a direct attack on the Special Counsel's investigation - full stop".

The resolution also goes directly after Rosenstein for his role in the ongoing Mueller investigation, criticizing him for refusing to produce a memo that outlines the scope of that investigation and questioning whether the investigation was started on legitimate grounds. "But starting tomorrow, we can bring it up as a privileged motion", Meadows noted, which "really means that it would require a vote on the House floor within two days". His open threat of triggering a vote on impeachment - which he can do if he follows a certain set of procedural rules - could help him win concessions on other contentious issues before the House.

Minutes later, House Republicans voted to sanction the Department of Justice over GOP document requests. They say that Rosenstein has a conflict of interest by having both been involved in that application and overseeing Mueller's efforts.
