Trump, Putin sit down a bit late for closely watched summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump shake hands before a meeting in Helsinki

Trump's Tuesday remarks came after comments that were condemned by Democrats and Republicans alike at the Helsinki summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

Mr. Trump said he misspoke at a joint press conference Monday with Mr. Putin when he said he "didn't know why it would be" Russian Federation that hacked the election.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly was also reportedly angered by Trump's press conference and believed it would add fuel to special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing Russian Federation probe.

Those include Russia's annexation of Crimea, its support for rebel forces in eastern Ukraine and Bashar al-Assad's government in Syria, as well as its alleged use of chemical weapons in Britain, which Moscow has denied.

US President Donald Trump told Fox News in an interview recorded in Helsinki that he was not pro-Russia and that the former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan, who labelled his news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin as "treasonous" was "a very bad guy".

"We understand the Russian threat, and I think that is the widespread view here in the United States Senate among members of both parties", he said in press conference on Tuesday, addressing European and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

President Donald Trump tried to clarify remarks amid the fallout and furor over his summit and press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin, telling reporters that he misspoke and that his administration was taking steps to prevent 2018 election interference. "I have on numerous occasions noted our intelligence findings that Russians attempted to interfere in our elections".

In response, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump was trying to "squirm away from what he said yesterday". "The worry is that an emboldened Russian Federation will do things that will increase the risk and security uncertainty".

"The sentence should have been, 'I don't see any reason why I wouldn't, or why it wouldn't be Russia" instead of "why it would", Trump said, in a rare admission of error by the bombastic US leader.

"We're all sort of used to Trump by now, and you say to yourself that we've gone as low as we can, and then you see what he said, and it's so much worse than you'd think", Deitz said.

There is also silence from two other Minnesota Republican members of Congress, Tom Emmer and Jason Lewis, both strong Trump supporters.

"Canada is in a particularly exposed position compared to other western allies because of our trade dependence on the United States", Paris said.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein went to Trump last week and offered to hold off announcing the charges until after he had met with Putin in Helsinki on Monday, Bloomberg reports.

McConnell says there is "indisputable evidence" Russian Federation tried to affect the 2016 presidential election.

But the U.S. president found precious little support for his decision not to confront the Russian leader - on either side of the political aisle.

"We stand by our North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies and all those countries who are facing Russian aggression", Ryan said.

If tangible results from the meeting were thin, the ceremony of it and the civil atmosphere between the two world leaders received considerable attention and was interpreted as a move toward improving the soured relations between Washington and Moscow.

Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters.

"To me, it looks like a D.C. -centered media feeding frenzy", he said, adding: "I think, overall, he is doing a great job and he has my support".
