Wimbledon 2018 -- Kevin Anderson wins men's semifinal match

U.S. player John Isner reacts against South Africa´s Kevin Anderson during the final set tie-break of their men´s singles semi-final match at Wimbledon, July 13, 2018.

The two players were well matched throughout and the lack of a tiebreak in the final set prolonged the match until Anderson finally broke through at 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 26-24.

It also was just the second time in the Open era that both men's semifinals at Wimbledon went to five sets. Isner was 8-3 lifetime versus Anderson coming into the match.

"I was for the roof because we started to play, and I wanted to play in the same conditions". Anderson moved to his first Wimbledon final as Isner produced his 59th unforced error.

John Isner thanked Kevin Anderson for his "class and humility" and apologised for "screwing the schedule" following a record-breaking marathon Wimbledon semi-final.

He added: "It's a bit of a sign for the Grand Slams to change this five-set format". Novak is in the range as well, hitting a return victor for a deuce and he creates a break point, only to be denied by Nadal's service victor, as often when he was in danger in this match.

It will be a rematch of the 2016 showpiece against Angelique Kerber which Williams won in straight sets.

Second-seeded Rafael Nadal and 12th-seeded Novak Djokovic took the court after Isner and Anderson, about 8:10 p.m. local time.

The second semifinal then was halted when the third set ended just past 11 p.m., because of a neighborhood curfew.

Friday's other semi-final pitches Anderson, the eighth seed who lost to Nadal in last year's US Open final, against ninth-seeded American John Isner.

Discussing his upcoming final with Anderson, who came through a six-hour-and-36-minute slog with Isner on Friday, Djokovic joked: "Hopefully we can first of all play, hopefully we can get on the court!"

As expected in a match between very tall men with booming serves, the first three sets were decided in tiebreakers.

Friday´s epic, which finished shortly before 8pm forcing Nadal and Djokovic to start under the roof, was the longest semi-final ever played at Wimbledon, surpassing the four hours 44 minutes it took Djokovic to beat Juan Martin del Potro in 2013.

Meanwhile, Anderson didn't face a break point in the fifth set.

Anderson again broke the hard-serving American in the fourth set on his way to forcing a deciding set.

Nadal grabbed the fourth set to set up a monumental 91-minute decider that Djokovic clinched when Nadal fired a forehand wide.

Nadal will regret his missed opportunity the night before, when he was in the ascendancy but passed up two set points.

Isner had never got past the third round at Wimbledon before this year while a run to the last-eight at the 2011 US Open had been his previous best at the majors.
