Without Drama, Rand Paul Falls Into Line for Kavanaugh

Schumer calls on Bush to release Kavanaugh White House documents

Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's choice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, arrives for a private meeting with Sen.

Mr. Paul's support leaves Democrats with only a narrow path to defeating Judge Kavanaugh.

Manchin will be the first Senate Democrat to meet with Kavanaugh, a conservative appeals court judge, since his nomination earlier this month.

"I will not make a final decision on Judge Kavanaugh's nomination until I complete a thorough and fair examination of his candidacy in order to decide whether he should hold the position of Associate Justice on the highest court in the land, just as I did with Neil Gorsuch", Manchin also said.

"I am very concerned about his position on privacy and the Fourth Amendment", Paul told Politico's Burgess Everett in an interview. United States, which broadly limited law enforcement's ability to monitor individuals using cell phone data without a warrant, as a "new precedent" leaving him hopeful that "Judge Kavanaugh will be more open to a Fourth Amendment that protects digital records and property".

Paul said that his conversation with Kavanaugh Tuesday convinced him that he would evaluate Supreme Court cases "from a textual and originalist point of view".

Democrats and Republicans have sparred in particular this week over Kavanaugh's staff secretary records.

"What we do need is access to documents that show Kavanaugh's views on and involvement in important issues like torture, the Enron task force, health care and presidential signing statements", the committee's top Democrat, Sen. She was confirmed anyway, thanks to Democratic swing votes. Joe Manchin for almost two hours.

According to a poll from the North Star Opinion Research a majority of voters in West Virginia (55% to 30%) say they'd like to see the Senate confirm Judge Kavanaugh. John McCain, R-Ariz., who is fighting brain cancer, they can not afford to lose a single Republican vote if all Democrats vote "no". The letter also asks for any documents that were "written by, edited by, prepared in whole or part by, under the supervision of, or at the direction of" Kavanaugh, and any record that refers to him by name, his initials or his title.

Democrats have countered that Kavanaugh's role in some of the defining - and polarizing - Bush administration debates should be part of the record they review while considering his nomination.

Senate Republicans are requesting documents from Supreme Court nominee Bret Kavanaugh's time in the Bush White House but they're doing it without the support of Democrats who believe more documents should be produced.
