Academy Awards To Introduce New Category For "Outstanding Achievement In Popular Film"

Stephen King’s Top Horror Movie Adaptations

On Wednesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the February 24, 2019, ceremony will feature a few additions - including a new category celebrating outstanding achievement in popular film. "The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast".

Starting with the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020, a new Oscar will be awarded for achievement in popular film. The 2019 ceremony will still air on February 24, while the 2020 show will move to February 9.

The Academy has recently made much-lauded moves to diversify and expand its membership, which would theoretically lead to a corresponding diversification and expansion of the kind of films that get nominated for, and awarded, Oscars.

The 2018 awards show, which clocked in at nearly four hours, was the least-watched Oscars to date.

Earlier airdate of February 9th, 2020.

In a message to its members the Academy said eligibility requirements for the new category and other key details would be "forthcoming".

This may be inspired by declining Oscar ratings over the years as well as the Best Picture victories for more niche movies like "Spotlight" (2015), "Moonlight" (2016) and "The Shape of Water" (2017).

It's unclear yet whether the new award will be given out at the next show, in 2019, or even what the voting criteria is going to be, but the new gong will likely mean good news for films like Black Panther and The Greatest Showman.

Reaction to the announcement was mixed, with many calling the "popular film" award a cheapening of the Oscars, while others lamented over the lack of recognition for stunt performers, voice actors, and motion-capture performers.

We are excited about these steps, and look forward to sharing more details with you. 91st Oscars telecast is now scheduled for Sunday, February 24, 2019.

"Here's the ten highest-grossing films, when accounting for inflation aka America's most "popular" films," Palotta wrote. Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film?

In order to fit all the awards into the new 3-hour timeslot, certain awards will be presented during commercial breaks. And that's saying a lot since you awarded Best Picture to Crash.
