Actor Steven Seagal Appointed Russian Ministry’s As ‘Special Representative’

Moscow appoints action star Steven Seagal special envoy on Russia-US humanitarian ties

Back in 2016, Steven Seagal was awarded Russian citizenship, likely because he was making so many trips to visit his friend Vladimir Putin.

Steven Seagal, a martial artist, is popular in Europe and Russian circles for his action movies.

Actor Steven Seagal attends the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup final football match between France and Croatia at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on July 15.

So, in the hope of stabilizing that fraught dynamic, Russian Federation has appointed a special representative dedicated to improving Russia-U.S. relations, working in the "humanitarian sphere" and "in the sphere of culture, public and youth exchanges".

The Russian Foreign Ministry likened Seagal's new role to that of a United Nations goodwill ambassador and said that the actor, who is known for his martial arts prowess, would receive no salary.

Seagal's unpaid position would "facilitate relations between Russian Federation and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges".

But since then relations between the two countries have deteriorated, with U.S intelligence agencies accusing Moscow of meddling in the 2016 presidential election. The two countries are also at odds over Syria and Ukraine.

Seagal, who sometimes appears on Russian state TV to talk about his views and career, was cited by Kremlin-backed TV station Russia Today (RT) as welcoming the appointment. The actor attended Putin's recent swearing-in ceremony in May.

Russian Federation is like a second "home" to Seagal.

The Independent says that Seagal has "faced some criticism for some comments he has made about the controversial Russian leader", including describing Putin as "one of the greatest world leaders" during a 2013 interview.
