Senator John Mc Cain died on Sunday

Trump wants to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico.

McCain, a six-term Arizona senator who died at 81 after a long battle with brain cancer, was widely respected for his history as a Vietnam war hero and his commitment to his moral code over party alliance.

McCain, even as he neared death, disparaged Trump's presidency, rebuking the USA leader for his seeming embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin's position at last month's Helsinki summit that Russia had not meddled in the 2016 US presidential election.

The longtime feud between the two men reached its peak on Monday, after the White House raised its flag to full staff, prompting outrage at what people took to be a slight of the late senator.

President Donald Trump is not planning to attend McCain's funeral and the pair frequently clashed during his their careers.

In the statement, released two days after the statesman's death, the U.S. president said he respects Mr McCain's "service to our country". "Obviously we would have liked the honor to be extended further and would hope the president would extend that honor for the day of interment". However, Trump reportedly decided that extending sympathies to the bereft McCain family on Twitter would suffice.

He declined to answer any question's about the flag or Trump's response to McCain's death. A private funeral will follow at the Naval Academy Chapel and McCain is to be buried at the academy cemetery.

On Saturday, a national memorial service will be held at the Washington National Cathedral, where former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama will speak. The service will also include a performance of the Irish ballad "Danny Boy" by opera singer Renée Fleming.

Jeff Flake, the junior Republican senator who served alongside McCain, Schumer said. Our words are too often cheap and imminently forgettable but John McCain paid our freight with his body and with his soul.

He later withdrew his support after the release of the infamous "Access Hollywood" tape in which Trump bragged about groping women. "We are citizens of the world's greatest republic, a nation of ideals, not blood and soil".

White supremacists who marched in Charlottesville previous year chanted "blood and soil", a translation of a Nazi slogan. "I like people that weren't captured", Trump said at a campaign event in Iowa in 2015. Kelli Ward, and Rep. Martha McSally have all embraced Trump and rejected McCain, along with retiring Sen. That seemed to be the breaking point for a key Trump constituency, veterans.

American Jewish Committee CEO David Harris remembered McCain as a "statesman and a national treasure - and an avid supporter of Israel, an ally he first visited almost 40 years ago".

"'Fellow Americans' - that association has meant more to me than any other. We have acquired great wealth and power in the process", McCain wrote.
