Deadly airstrikes on fish market in Yemen's Hodeidah

Air strikes on hospital and market in Yemen's Hodeidah kill dozens

On Thursday, the UN's special envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths said he plans to invite the country's warring factions to hold talks in the Swiss city of Geneva on September 6.

It also reviewed the statement issued by Arab Coalition regarding the involvement of the Houthi militia in a deadly attack on civilians on Thursday on a hospital and fish market in Hodeidah.

"The unilateral suspension of our naval operations is for a limited period", the rebels said in a statement released by their defence ministry.

Pierce strongly condemned the attack on the Saudi oil tanker and other aggressive attacks in the Red Sea, expressing concern about shipments of arms passing through the area.

Mr. Griffiths has been leading efforts to prevent a full-scale coalition assault on Hodeida, which is responsible for more than 70 percent of imports to Yemen and is a vital lifeline for a country already teetering on the brink of starvation.

The Wall Street Journal reported in June that the United States military is helping the Saudi-led coalition to "fine-tune" its list of targets in Hodeida, reportedly in hopes of avoiding unnecessary civilian casualties.

It is not yet clear whether the parties involved-President Hadi's lawful government, backed by a Saudi-led global coalition, and the Houthi rebels-will take part in the negotiations or not, or in what context they will take place. "Houthi militia are behind killing of civilians in Hodeidah otoday".

"These targets were not from the coalition and the weaponry used was mortars, which are from the Houthis", he said.

United Nations envoy Martin Griffiths told the Security Council on Thursday "a political solution" to end the war in Yemen was "available" and urged world powers to support the new push for peace negotiations.

At a closed session of the United Nations, US Ambassador Nikki Haley blamed today's attack on the Saudi-led coalition.

Saudi Arabia says the Houthis are using the seaport to bring in weapons from Iran.

The campaign to take the city threatens to worsen Yemen's humanitarian situation as it is the main entry point for food, humanitarian aid and fuel supplies to the country.

Rebel-run media outlets accused the Saudi-led coalition of carrying out the attacks in Hodeida. The country is now the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

As Common Dreams reported, global aid groups have warned that an attempt by the Saudi-led coalition to take control of the port city could imperil shipments of life-saving food and medicine to millions of Yemenis as they face widespread food shortages and a worsening cholera epidemic.

On Friday, the World Health Organization warned that Yemen may be on the brink of a new cholera epidemic and called for a three-day truce to allow vaccinations.
