Do's and Don'ts: WI sales tax holiday

Ohio to have a sales-tax holiday

- A five-day sales tax holiday is kicking off in Wisconsin as people start their back-to-school shopping.

The sales tax holiday weekend in Florida runs August 3-5, 2018.

Arkansas' tax-free weekend will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 and end at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5.

The Ohio Senate unanimously approved a bill earlier this year that made the three-day sales tax holiday permanent.

Because of the crowds expected Friday through Sunday, some shoppers say they don't mind spending a little more now to avoid being slowed down by people on the tax-free weekend.

The tax exemption applies to most school supplies selling for $15 or less per item; also, most clothing and footwear for $60 or less per item. Every year places like the Gulfport Premium Outlets gear up and offer even more sales on top of the already eliminated seven percent tax. The price of each school computer accessory item must be $250 or less.

More clothing restrictions include cosmetics, handbags, sewing materials and wallets.

What neighboring states still hold tax free holidays? "In order to benefit the taxpayer, if the piece of clothing is used for a sport, but could also be used as an everyday clothing item for school, it qualifies as non-taxable". Alabama has one to allow consumers to buy emergency preparedness generators and other hurricane supplies and another for pre-school purchases.

In Wake County, according to a table from the state Department of Revenue, the total sales tax is 7.25 percent.
