England uprooted after Joe races to milestone

Zaheer Khan Kuldeep Yadav England vs India 2018

After a good day for the Indian bowlers, where they never allowed the hosts to break free and also kept picking up wickets, Mohammed Shami was especially chuffed about his performance after the fast bowler was involved in a spate of controversies back home. And after being bowled out for just 287 - having been 216-3 after winning the toss - they needed it. Kohli has taken that prediction and run with it.

But it is the suggestion that Kohli may have sworn in Root's direction that could land the India skipper in trouble with match referee Jeff Crowe, the former New Zealand captain.

Joe Root´s run out by opposing captain Virat Kohli sparked an England collapse against India on the opening day of the first Test at Edgbaston on Wednesday and may have set the tone for the series after the tourists´ skipper gave him a colourful and controversial send-off.

Kohli, who is leading India for the first time in a bilateral series against England in England, hasn't been that impressive while playing on English soil.

With that Kohli went into attack mode, his aggressive running almost bringing the end for Shami, who was well short of his ground as Anderson's throw from the deep whistled just past the stumps.

Sam Curran (four for 74) made a sterling home bid for the headlines, with three wickets in eight balls during a titanic first hour of the afternoon - and England were well-served too by Ben Stokes and James Anderson.

The wickets were ultimately shared around - something that will please England, who have often been reliant on Anderson and Broad.

This will be one of the key battles of the Test series as the No1 Indian batsmen takes on the No1 England bowler.

Booed by the crowd when he came out to bat, Kohli left to applause from the England fielders and fans alike.

Anderson was rewarded for his efforts with 2-41 while Adil Rashid, brought on to bowl at the tail, trapped Ishant Sharma lbw before dismissing Kohli to finish for 2-31.

Things could have been worse as three balls later, Kohli (on 0*) edged Anderson to Jos Buttler at gully with the fielder failing to latch onto a tough chance despite putting in a fine dive.

India's powerful top-order will now be expected to pile on the runs when they bat. He swung the ball back in big into Murali Vijay, and suddenly India's openers looked in troubled.

The opening Test between India and England is now underway and the Indian captain came to bat after Murali Vijay was dismissed by Sam Curran with the score at 50 in the 14th over.
