Hundreds evacuated in Virginia after dam overflows

Kipp Teague

The College Lake Dam, whose complete failure could put the downstream city of 80,000 under 17 feet of water in seven minutes, exceeded its capacity Thursday after four to six inches of rain fell, per WSLS and the BBC.

It was feared that if the dam did fail and collapse, water would flood from the creek into the James River, which is close to the city's business district.

A dire warning from the National Weather Service has forced an evacuation around the College Lake Dam in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The deluge of rain that affected much of Virginia on Thursday, causing road closures and power outages in the Shenandoah Valley, has prompted evacuations in Lynchburg, just below an overflowing dam.

A press conference is scheduled to be held at 3 p.m. for an update.

Local outlet WDBJ7 said a number of people whose homes were deemed to be at risk had been evacuated to nearby schools, along with their pets. The NWS issued a flash flood watch for the area that lasts until early Friday. The dam has been under survey by the city for years as a safety hazard.

City officials posted pictures Thursday of rescuers using a raft to take families from a flood-threatened apartment complex as well as the partial collapse of one road into an adjacent creek.

College Lake is a manmade lake, built in the early 1930s by the Virginia Department of Highways as part of the development of U.S. Highway 460, west of Lynchburg. The original surface area of the lake was reported to be 44 acres and has been reduced to 19 acres due to sedimentation.

Piper Van dePerre, with the Lynchburg Department of Emergency Services, told CNN affiliate WDBJ that crews are working with a list of 124 residences that need to be evacuated because of the imminent threat of a dam break.

The dam was built in the early '30s and, like many dams in the USA, doesn't meet current safety standards.
