Indian Navy put on alert as heavy rains lash Kerala

Rains, landslides kill 24, displace thousands in India's Kerala state

Three additional diving teams have also been dispatched to Aluva in coordination with the deputy collector for utilisation by the district collector in affected areas to augment the rescue, the release said.

As heavy rains continue to lash various parts of Kerala, worsening the flood situation in the state, the death toll has touched 29, following heavy floods and landslides.

The government of Kerala, which has a population of 33 million people, has imposed a ban on the movement of lorries and tourist vehicles in Idukki. Many areas are submerged after authorities opened the sluice gates of an overflowing Idamalayar dam.

Due to heavy rains and resultant floods in Kozhikode and Waynad districts, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been moved to Kozhikode.

A high alert has been sounded in Idukki, where all the five shutters of the Cheruthoni dam on Idukki reservoir were opened to drain out excess water.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), on August 8, the state received 316 per cent more rainfall than normal. It is the first time in the history that all the five shutters of Idukki dam have been raised.

Around 70 people are stranded in a resort in Munnar after the roads to the resort were blocked due to a landslide.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with the Kerala Chief Minister yesterday in the wake of heavy rains and floods in the state, and offered all possible assistance to those affected. People living along the banks of the Periyar and the Cheruthoni rivers have been alerted about the shutter openings, Manorama Online reported. This will raise the water level in Periyar river and its subsidiaries. "MHA [Ministry of Home Affairs] is closely monitoring the flood situation".

"The haphazard development along the streams has affected the natural flow of rivers, which is a challenge right now", he said.

"Water levels in rivers are on the rise. Thus, there is a need to open the shutters of many dams", the chief minister said.

Meanwhile, Kochi Airport in a statement said flight operations are continuing uninterrupted and there has been no cancellations.

The arrival operations were resumed from 3.05 pm this evening, a spokesperson of the airport said.

Crops on 1,031 hectares (2547.66 acres) have been damaged and 31,000 people have been forced to take shelter in rescue camps, according to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority's (KSDMA) control room in the state capital.

Rajesh also went on to add that the main area to be affected by the shortage of power supply is the Palakkad town area because unlike the outskirts, the town does not have many facilities for water to subside.
