Karunanidhi’s death: Two foreigners join DMK cadre to shout slogans

#JustIn: Kaliagnar M. Karunanidhi Passes Away At 94

Hundreds of his supporters had swarmed the Kauvery Hospital, praying for the well-being of the leader.

The health condition of senior most Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader and five-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu M Karunanidhi is deteriorating with every hour, says a bulletin released by the Kauvery Hospital at 4:30 pm on Tuesday.

India's two national parties, Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress, have little presence in Tamil Nadu, a state of almost 70 million people where politics have been dominated by the DMK and Jayalalithaa's AIADMK.

His sharp dialogues and screenplay in Parasakthi (1952) made the movie a trendsetter in Tamil cinema. Both were bitter foes of Karunanidhi in politics. "I was told that he had been in politics for several decades and was a great leader".

Mr Karunanidhi managed to keep Tamil Nadu in the national spotlight by entering into alliances with the current ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in 1990 and then the Congress in 2004.

On Sunday, President Ramnath Kovind visited the former Chief Minister at the hospital and wished him speedy recovery. However, it lasted only for two years as he was dismissed by the then Prime Minister Chandrasekar on charges of helping the LTTE in the state.

Known as a charismatic leader and fiery orator, Mr Karunanidhi led his party in the elections in Tamil Nadu in 2016 when he was 91. He blamed the raid on his opponent Jayalalithaa who also faced allegations of graft and was found guilty of corruption after her death. Of the 15 elections held in Tamil Nadu since Independence, the DMK veteran faced 13 and lost none.

Karunanidhi's government was dismissed twice. Later, the party was split and actor-cum-politician M G Ramachandran formed a new party under the name All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Stalin was accompanied by some party colleagues.

The transition from Annadurai to Karunanidhi is a rallying point not just for the DMK, but also for the state's politics.
