Khabib vs McGregor set for October 6

McGregor

There won't be a face off between lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor until both fighters arrive in Las Vegas for fight week at UFC 229.

Conor McGregor has confirmed his return to the UFC with a fight against hated rival Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor was of course last seen in the boxing ring as he was well beaten by Floyd Mayweather but he is clearly eager to head back to the Octagon to regain what he believes is rightfully his.

McGregor and his entourage stormed the Barclays Center loading dock and the Irishman threw a dolly through the bus window in search of Nurmagomedov.

Negotiations for this bout dragged on for many weeks while McGregor argued a highly lucrative deal, even demanding an ownership stake in the UFC in exchange for returning to the cage, and Nurmagomedov also asked for a hefty raise. Last month he was sentenced to five days of community service in the United States after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct.

UFC chief White has already said he is expecting the bout to sell in the region of 2 million pay-per-view buys, meaning it would beat the current record of 1.65 million for McGregor's second fight with Nate Diaz in August 2016.

These two have a rich history with one another, and the undefeated Khabib (26-0) is the biggest challenge that McGregor (21-3) has ever faced.

Conor McGregor will return to the UFC Octagon for the first time in nearly two years in October.

McGregor had initiated the bus attack in response to Nurmagomedov and his team's cornering of Artem Lobov, who is one of the Irishman's good friends, ahead of UFC 223.

The UFC fighter is as famous for his concussive striking power as he is for his memorable microphone skills, his flambouyant dress sense, and his taste for a night on the town.

"I'm not fighting on that show", Diaz tweeted moments after stepping off stage, adding an expletive directed toward the UFC.
