Kohli holds firm in 1st Test thriller after Curran revives England

England make history, become first to play 1000 test matches

Indian captain Virat Kohli (left) and Dinesh Karthik leave the field at stumps on day three of the first test against England.

It all started with R Ashwin sending back Keaton Jennings and Joe Root inside the first 30 minutes before Ishant Sharma came on to bowl and dismissed David Malan.

Resuming the second session at 86/6, England could add another 74 runs, thanks to Sam Curran's sensational 63 off 65 deliveries, even as pacer Ishant Sharma (5/51) continued with his fine rhythm to trouble the lower batting order of the hosts.

Afterwards, 20-year-old Curran and Adil Rashid (16) tried their best in a 48-run stand for the eighth wicket.

Day three of the first Test at the Edgbaston Cricket Stadium in Edgbaston, Birmingham between India and England had nearly everything and was easily one of the most entertaining days.

"I had goosebumps listening to the Barmy Army chants and that first hour tomorrow (Saturday) is going to be crucial", Curran said.

England did not have to wait long for their first breakthroughs as Broad (2/29) trapped Vijay and had Shikhar Dhawan (13) caught behind.

That got the Edgbaston crowd roaring on the bowlers in a manner reminiscent of the raucous cheers that accompanied England legend Ian Botham's celebrated match-winning spell of five for one in 28 balls in the 1981 Ashes Test at the Birmingham ground. At the break, Jos Buttler (1) was the last unbeaten recognised batsman.

Middlesex left-hander Dawid Malan arguably "owed" England a big score after dropping Kohli in the slips on 21 and 51.

KL Rahul (13) did not look too comfortable at the crease, and fell to Ben Stokes (1/25) just as his third-wicket partnership with Kohli was starting to take shape.

With 35 wickets having tumbled inside three days, England will be hoping they can grab the five remaining Indian wickets quickly on day four so that they can mark their 1000th test with a victory. India saw a couple of edges not getting into the hands of the fielders.

Curran, who bats left-handed as well as bowls, brought up his maiden Test fifty off a mere 54 balls in supreme style by lofting Sharma over extra-cover for six.
