Northern California blazes now largest in state history

PG&E employee dies after accident tied to the Carr fire company says

Authorities say twin blazes rapidly spreading in Northern California have become the state's largest wildfire in history.

The two wildfires that make up the Mendocino Complex Fire grew over the weekend to become the second largest wildfire in the state's history.

Trump initiated the spat on Sunday when he tweeted that the fires "are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws", which cause water to be "diverted into the Pacific Ocean", and prevent trees from being cleared.

As of Sunday morning, the Carr Fire had destroyed more than 1,600 buildings and consumed more than 154,000 acres. But the number of acres burned this year at 292,455 is about 50 percent higher than the 219,369 acres burnt last year and more than double the 118,811-acre average for the last 5 years.

Crews battling the Mendocino Complex fire on Monday were focusing on keeping flames from breaking through fire lines on a ridge above the foothill communities of Nice, Lucerne, Glen Haven and Clearlake Oaks, Tricia Austin, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire said.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has been puzzled by the claims from the president, according to Fox News.

President TrumpDonald John TrumpSouth Korea urges Pyongyang to speed up denuclearization process More than a dozen arrested as protesters, counter-protesters clash in Berkeley Trump golfs with Graham at New Jersey club MORE is solidifying his opposition to California's environmental policies, saying they are to blame for the state's historic wildfires. He was killed July 29 by a falling tree while fighting the wildfire that has closed Yosemite National Park at the height of tourist season.

In Shasta County, the Carr fire located near Redding, California has burned entire neighborhoods and forced thousands to flee.

Firefighters normally expect to count on wildfires "laying down" at night as the temperature sinks, allowing night shift personnel to "go direct" in constructing fire lines very close to the edge of the fires.

But state fire officials, climate scientists and ecologists say Trump's assertion is baffling - and false. The Carr Fire has destroyed more than 1,000 homes in and around Redding.

A couple of fast-growing wildfires in northern California expanded to more than two-thirds the size of sprawling Los Angeles as more residents were ordered to evacuate their homes and tired firefighters endured high temperatures and gusting winds.

More than 14,000 firefighters and hundreds of USA army personnel are trying to contain the more than a dozen major fires burning throughout the state.

Also, evacuation warnings in areas of Mendocino and Lake counties have been lifted.

In an unrelated long-running dispute, farmers have demanded more water to irrigate crops for years, while environmentalists say diverting more water to crops would kill off fish stock and hurt rivers.

The last time active-duty military personnel were mobilized was in September 2017, when 200 soldiers from JBLM were mobilized to help battle the North Umpqua Complex wildfires in OR for 30 days, NIFC said.

At the same time, firefighters have pulled back in the uninhabited national forests to the north, where they have cut fire lines and are employing indirect methods.
