Rogic's Celtic dumped out of Champions League

Celtic Manager Brendan Rodgers

Celtic took control, with Tom Rogic and Griffiths both having luckless efforts on goal before the latter sent a fine Callum McGregor cross inches past the post from eight yards.

Scott Sinclair responded with a header but it was not enough to prevent Celtic going out of the Champions League at AEK Athens.

The Champions League exit is another blow for Celtic, whose summer has been less than ideal with a lack of new faces coming through the doors casting a doubt over Rodgers' long-term future at the club.

But Celtic continued to look susceptible to the counter and it was not a huge surprise when AEK got themselves a second in the 50th minute, as Marko Livaja nodded in from close range after Vassilis Lambropoulos headed a free-kick down to the former Inter man.

Red Star, who have never qualified for the Champions League group stage, will meet Salzburg after the Austrian team strolled into the playoffs with a 4-0 defeat of Macedonians Shkendija.

"I still felt this was a game in which we had more than enough to win but you have to defend better than we did".

I thought a lot of our build-up play was worth something from the game but you can't defend that softly.

"I don't want to make excuses", added Rodgers.

Rodgers said: "Dedryck Boyata is fit, but he's not here with us". "It's important that we have European football this year".

Benfica, champions in 1961 and 1962, earned a 2-1 overall win over Fenerbahce after a 1-1 draw in Istanbul and four-time winners Ajax Amsterdam cruised to a 5-2 aggregate defeat of Standard Liege. 2-0 down after 50 minutes, a miracle was needed for them to progress.
