Thomas Cook Says ‘No Evidence’ Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Killed Egypt Holiday Couple

Thomas Cook Says ‘No Evidence’ Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Killed Egypt Holiday Couple

The daughter of a couple who died while at an Egyptian hotel complex has said she believes something suspicious caused their deaths.

The tour operator offered flights back to Britain to all of its customers at the Steigenberger Aqua Magic hotel in Hurghada on the Red Sea coast, after the sudden deaths of a Lancashire couple earlier this week.

Dr Maged Eledawy, the head of Hurghada Hospital, earlier said Mr Cooper died after suffering a heart attack before Susan died from grief.

"Mum and dad meant the world to me and the children and we are now in utter shock over what is happening".

Of the United Kingdom customers approximately 100, or half, chose to fly back while the others opted to stay in Hurghada but at a different hotel.

The company told Sky News that it was "deeply saddened by the tragic deaths" and that 301 customers were being removed from the Steigenberger Aqua Magic Hotel in Hurghada.

Alison Cope, a Thomas Cook customer staying at the Steigenberger, said the company had "fobbed off" guests who had complained "about sickness, illness, low level standards of the food, the hygiene of the glasses".

Egyptian officials said on Friday that both deaths were the result of heart failure, but Sadeq said the cause was still not yet clear.

He said that a doctor's preliminary report had indicated that the deaths were due to natural causes.

She was taken to hospital after passing blood and being sick every time she ate something in the hotel.

Ms Ormerod, who remains in Egypt with her three children, has now said her biggest priority is on getting the children home.

"Thomas Cook has all sorts of excuses they want to come out with; it's the weather, it's the change in climate, it's too much alcohol - every single excuse apart from actually listening and taking on board what these people are saying".

"While we understand this is upsetting for those on holiday, we believe this is the right thing to do".

Thomas Cook said customers due to travel in the coming weeks to the hotel - which the tour operator gave a 96-percent rating in an audit last month - would be offered alternative holidays.

A spokesperson for travel industry body ABTA said: "We are very sad to hear of the deaths of two British holidaymakers in Hurghada and our thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues at this hard time".

"We are urgently investigating with the hotel and supporting the local authorities".

Egypt's key tourism industry has been recovering from a devastating blow in 2015 when jihadists bombed a Russian airliner carrying holidaymakers from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, killing all 224 on board.
