US VP welcomes return of Korean War remains

The North Korea flag flutters next to concertina wire at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur

A USA military plane made a rare trip into North Korea to retrieve the 55 cases.

Rick Downes, executive director of a group of families whose loved ones never came home from the Korean War, said it now appears that Pyongyang is trying to help.

North Korea "is in the room as a member of the ASEAN regional forum among these 27 countries, so there will be discussions that are inclusive of North Korea", a senior State Department official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

His uncle, who was from Honolulu, was a corporal in the 31st Infantry Regiment of the Army's 7th Infantry Division. He declined to disclose the name on the tag but said the service member's family had been notified.

Officials familiar with the capabilities of the Hermit Kingdom said United States spy agencies were seeing signs of construction at a large research facility in Sanumdong, on the outskirts of Pyongyang.

"Thousands of families across the United States have waited more than six decades to be reunited with their loved ones who were lost in the Korean War".

The agency identifies remains of servicemen killed in past conflicts.

Byrd told reporters that "there was a single dog tag (US soldier's identity tag) provided with the remains".

There are thousands of Americans who remain unaccounted for after the war, which began when the North invaded the South in 1950.

The signing of a peace treaty could allow the North to demand the pullout of the 28,500 American troops stationed in South Korea.

The pledge to transfer war remains was seen as a goodwill gesture by Kim at the Singapore summit, and was the most concrete agreement reached by the two sides so far. Four U.S. fighter jets flew low in a tribute. "Welcome home", Pence said.

Mr Trump had declared soon after his summit with Mr Kim in Singapore that North Korea no longer posed nuclear threats, but Pyongyang has offered no details on its plan to denuclearise and subsequent talks have not gone smoothly.

It could be hard to find out if the remains are even American military members. I just think that we are now we are going to start the process of denuclearization of North Korea, and I believe that he's going back and will start it virtually immediately, and he's already indicated that and you look at what he's done.

Political analyst and former Clinton aide Doug Schoen urged the United States to put pressure on Kim Jon-un's allies in Russian Federation and China to cut energy supplies to the rogue nation and help stop the creation of new missiles.

In late June, U.S. officials told U.S. media outlets that intelligence agencies believed North Korea had increased production of fuel for nuclear weapons and that it did not intend to fully give up its nuclear arsenal. It said it "never leaves troops behind, living or deceased, and will continue the mission of repatriation until every service member returns home".

Kim signed an agreement to work toward denuclearization during a summit with Trump last month, and Trump spent the wake of the meeting praising the brutal regime leader's character and intelligence. But there have been concerns that North Korea hasn't taken any serious disarmament measures since then.

But Trump now faces criticism at home and elsewhere that North Korea hasn't taken any serious steps toward disarmament and may be trying to buy time to weaken worldwide sanctions against it. "This is a facility where they build ICBMs and space-launch vehicles". North Korea has long argued its nukes are aimed at coping with U.S. military threats, saying it wants to sign a peace treaty with the United States to formally end the war.

Many Americans who went missing were prisoners of war who died before the war ended or were left behind during enemy advancements.

The return coincided with the 65th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. North Korea has steadfastly argued its nuclear weapons are meant to neutralize alleged USA plans to attack it.

Numerous fallen service members died in North Korea and were buried by their comrades where they fell.

"We remain concerned about the scale of North Korea's illicit procurement, in particular of refined petroleum products via United Nations -prohibited ship-to-ship transfers", the official said.
