USA can't be trusted, Iran's Rouhani tells North Korea

John Bolton Says North Korea Hasn't Done Much To Rid Itself Of Nuclear Weapons

The latest statement by the North's foreign ministry also accused United States officials of "going against the intention of President Trump" by "making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the global sanctions and pressure".

The rival Koreas will meet Monday for high-level talks meant to prepare for a summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, South Korea said Thursday, the third such meetings between the leaders in recent months.

The United States is "not willing to wait for too long" for North Korea to take steps toward denuclearization, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Wednesday.

"They have to understand that the worldwide community still expects them to denuclearize and so we're willing to wait if they want to wait, but we're not willing to wait for too long", said Haley, who has pushed through three United Nations sanctions packages since arriving at the world body 18 months ago.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told North Korea's foreign minister that the United States can not be trusted, Tehran's state media said, as the United States seeks a deal to rein in the North's nuclear and missile programmes.

Pyongyang's state media has highlighted it has made goodwill gestures, such as a moratorium on nuclear and missile tests, the dismantling of a nuclear site, and the return of the remains of US soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War.

Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, also said this week that North Korea has not taken the steps necessary to denuclearise. Those followed contentious remarks last week by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho on the sidelines of a regional summit in Singapore.

The country claimed that the U.S.is denying it "basic decorum" and is clinging "to the outdated acting script which the previous administrations have all tried and failed", warning that they "cannot expect any progress in the implementation" of the joint agreement between the two countries reached earlier this year. "Any violation that detracts from the world's goal of finally, fully denuclearizing North Korea would be something that America would take very seriously".

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani delivers a statement after a two day visit in Bern, Switzerland, July 3, 2018.

North Korea called out the U.S.' "shameless and impertinent behavior", according to a press release out Thursday via a foreign ministry spokesperson. Washington is pushing for the North to begin giving up its nuclear program.

Iran dismissed a last-minute offer from Washington for talks this week, saying it could not negotiate after the Trump administration reneged on a 2015 deal to lift sanctions in return for curbs on Iran's own nuclear programme.

"We're going to continue to apply maximum pressure to North Korea until they denuclearize, just as we are to Iran".
