Vietnam pays respect to US Sen. John McCain

The American flag flies at half-staff at the Capitol in honor of Sen. John Mc Cain of Arizona who died Saturday of brain cancer in Washington Monday Aug. 27 2018. Mc Cain will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda on Friday

Vietnam's foreign minister said Mr McCain, whose death was announced on Saturday, was a "symbol of his generation" who helped "heal the wounds of war".

While the White House lowered their flags to half-staff on Saturday, this morning, these flags at the White House and the Eisenhower Executive Building are back at full-staff.

Flags will remain lowered until sunset on the day of internment.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump ordered that the flags be flown at half-staff in honor of McCain's passing.

Matt House, spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), said that the senator and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have "requested that the [Department of Defense] provide necessary support so that USA flags on all government buildings remain at half mast through sunset on the day of Senator McCain's interment".

The White House issued no formal statement over the weekend about McCain's death, though one was drafted, according to United States media. But presidents have the power to issue proclamations extending that period. In a tweet, the show revealed that the White House declined to comment on the status of the flag.

He went on to attack McCain's service in the military, saying of the onetime prisoner of war: "I like people that weren't captured".

Sarah Huckabee Sanders is sure to be asked about the American flag placement at today's White House briefing.

McCain's rebuttals were often more measured than Trump's brash rhetoric. The White House offered no official statement, but Trump did tweet his "deepest sympathies and respect" to McCain's family.

McCain was one of Trump's sharpest critics, and made clear in one of his final wishes as he struggled with brain cancer that he did not want the president to attend his funeral. McCain lost said election to former President Barrack Obama. "Our hearts and prayers are with you!" A formal ceremony will take place in the Rotunda at approximately 11 a.m., on Friday, honoring Senator McCain's life and service to the nation.

He will be buried in a private service at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, where his service to his country began six decades ago, at a cemetery overlooking Maryland's Severn River.
