Why this weekend's Trump Tower tweet matters

WASHINGTON DC- JULY 05 U.S. President Donald Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr. walk out onto the North Portico of the White House while departing on a trip to Wyoming to attend a Make America Great rally

The remarks, which came during a friendly interview on The Laura Ingraham Show, came after President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter the June 2016 meeting was meant to get damaging information on his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton - contradicting a statement he dictated when the meeting came to light a year ago. After initially claiming that the meeting had nothing to do with Clinton and instead about Russian adoption sanctions, this weekend's tweet seemed to admit that Trump's team went to the meeting in hopes of getting the dirt that was promised.

He concluded by further distancing himself from the meeting his son arranged, writing, "I did not know about it!" The meeting between Mr Trump Jr and Ms Natalia Veselnitskaya is now the subject of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Trump's admission that his son's 2016 Russian meeting was to get information on Clinton runs counter to the narrative he has previously pushed about the meeting.

Email released by Donald Jr. himself showed he had been keen on the meeting because his father's campaign was being offered potentially damaging information on Clinton.

"I wasn't involved in the statement drafting at all, nor was the President", Sekulow said on July 12, 2017.

The Post had reported that the statement to the Times was dictated by the President, though at the time his lawyers denied his involvement.

President Trump has repeatedly denied that his campaign worked with Moscow, saying "No Collusion!"

"Most politicians would have gone to a meeting like the one Don Jr attended in order to get info on an opponent", Mr Trump tweeted.

The meeting, first reported by The New York Times, happened two weeks after Trump secured the Republican nomination.

President Donald Trump is renewing his attacks on two of his favorite targets: the special counsel Russian Federation probe and the news media. "In agreeing to the meeting, the younger Trump told Goldstone, "(I) f it's what you say I love it".

They later reversed course in a memo to Mueller and said Trump was indeed behind the statement that omitted the prospect of collecting dirt on Clinton. In politics, that's called opposition research. How did the president's circle explain that meeting back then? Mueller is probing whether anyone connected with the president's campaign conspired with Russian Federation to tip the election in Trump's favor.

Trump's tweet reveals that he lied previous year when he personally dictated a statement, released by his son, Donald Trump Jr., which claimed the meeting was mostly about USA adoption of Russian children. Sekulow asked on ABC News' "This Week," implying no laws prohibit campaign aides from meeting with foreign agents.

And despite Trump's public Twitter denial, the president has expressed worry that his son may face legal exposure even as he believes he did nothing wrong, according to three people close to the White House familiar with the president's thinking but not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations. On Monday night, Giuliani continued teasing the possibility of Trump talking with Mueller while attempting to severely limit the scope of their discussion.

Indeed, that's been the Trump team's story.

He defended calling the media "The Enemy of the People", and said journalists "purposely cause great division and distrust" and can "cause War!" I say, as they come, Tax them.
