Zimbabwe election: MDC's Chamisa mounts legal challenge against result

MDC-T leader Nelson Chamisa

Zimbabwe's main opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, filed a court challenge on Friday against President Emmerson Mnangagwa's election victory, he wrote on Twitter, a move that would delay Mnangagwa's inauguration that had been slated for this Sunday.

"It will no longer happen".

After many speculations, Zimbabwe Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi put the issue to rest by announcing that Mnangagwa's inauguration has been indefinitely deferred after election court challenge.

Chamisa has alleged the results were manipulated by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to ensure that Zanu-PF leader and President-elect Emmerson Mnangagwa won.

The Constitutional Court, which can declare a new victor or order a fresh election, must rule within 14 days of an election petition.

Party leader Nelson Chamisa tweeted: "Our legal team successfully filed our court papers".

The party must prove that any irregularities were grave enough to change the outcome of the vote. "We have a good case and cause".

Mr Chamisa wants the court to declare him the victor or call a fresh election, it is reported.

Chamisa has claimed he won 56 percent of votes and called the election "fraudulent, illegal and illegitimate".

European Union observers said that the ZANU-PF candidate had benefitted from an "un-level playing field" and some voter intimidation, though worldwide monitors largely praised the conduct of the election.

The MDC reported that its foreign lawyers had initially been denied entry into the Constitutional Court on work permit grounds.

They may now need to send apologies just in case someone turns up.

After the Tendai Biti saga, America has re-instated the ZIDERA sanctions against the people of Zimbabwe for the next 5 years.

"At the moment, we are not moving forward because according to the Constitution we should wait for seven days after declaration of the results so that if there is anyone who wants to appeal against the results, they do so", President Mnangagwa said.
