Bjorn: McIlroy the right man to lead final day charge

The 2018 Ryder Cup

All the superb golf in team play tends to stand for nothing if one side loses the singles so comprehensively that a Saturday night lead is shredded by Sunday teatime. The Americans haven't won in Europe since 1993. We ran against two guys that were both playing well and when one was out of the hole, especially in best-ball, the other one made birdie and vice versa.

Casey and Hatton, a Ryder Cup rookie, were on the losing side of a thrilling fourballs against Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas on Friday, but blew away world number one Johnson and Fowler by going a combined nine-under.

Paul Casey faces a tough clash with three-time major victor Brooks Koepka in match two followed by Justin Rose against Webb Simpson, with Jon Rahm taking on Tiger Woods in a potentially explosive match-up. "We've seen the scenarios play out over the years".

"We knew how much was on the line to keep that distance", Stenson said afterward, still buzzing from his clutch finish. While certainly not impossible to pull off such a comeback - it was done in 1999 by the Americans at Brookline, and again in 2012 by the Europeans at Medinah - the USA hasn't won the Ryder Cup on this side of the Atlantic in a quarter-century. Describing the day as "a bit of a roller coaster ride", Bjorn knows the Americans will come out fighting today with Jim Furyk sticking with his fourball pairings.

British Open champion Molinari and Fleetwood, the only pair to win two points on day one, condemned Woods and an out-of-sorts Reed to a 4 and 3 defeat in the third match. Obviously, he was hoping for a similar result from Finau-Koepka, Johnson-Fowler, and Thomas-Spieth, and for a Reed-Woods rebound after a 3&1 loss. 'History will show me and everybody on the team that this is not over, ' said Bjorn.

Spieth and Justin Thomas were the heroes for Team USA on Day Two of the Ryder Cup, in Paris.

The Europeans, who swept a foursomes session for the first time on Friday afternoon, were denied a first fourballs whitewash since 1989 by Spieth and Thomas.

Tiger Woods is 0-3 and looks worn out.

McIlroy and Poulter won the first two holes against an out-of-sorts Spieth and Thomas, but the Americans soon found their range and took four out of five holes from the fourth. The Europeans dovetailed superbly to surge four-up after eight holes, a lead they still held after 12.

Reed, the pugnacious talisman across his first two Ryder Cups, was having a frightful time off the tee, and was grateful for Woods' long birdie putt on seven that brought the contest back to a single hole.

Woods is winless in his first three matches, two with Patrick Reed and one with Bryson DeChambeau.

It was Woods' misfortune that he went up against Fleetwood and Molinari in each match.

Woods has failed to win seven consecutive matches, dating to his singles victory against Molinari in Wales in 2010. "Just pretty (ticked) off, the fact that I lost three matches and didn't feel like I played poorly".

Only Spieth of the United States superstars was playing close to his usual esteemed standards.

But the Europeans should be able to rest a little easier in the team room Saturday night.
