"Coffee Boy" Papadopoulos Sentenced To 14 Days

George Papadopoulos and wife Simona Mangiante Papadopoulos after their Chicago wedding

George Papdopoulos, a former foreign policy adviser to President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, was sentenced Friday to 14 days in prison on charges stemming from Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, according to reports.

In his pre-sentencing statement, Papadopoulos admitted lying to FBI investigators in January 2017 but said it had been out of a desire to protect his career and a naive loyalty to the Trump administration.

Papadopoulos apparently raised the possibility of setting up a meeting between Trump and Putin during a national security meeting in March 2016.

Lawyers for Mr. Papadopoulos dispute some of the government's characterizations, and they asked the judge to sentence him to probation.

He admitted past year to lying to the FBI about those contacts with Russians and Russian intermediaries, false statements that prosecutors say caused irreparable harm to the investigation during its early months.

In today's sentencing, Papadopoulos was also handed a fine of $9,500 (£7.500), 12 months of supervised release and 200 hours of community service.

US President Donald Trump responds to a reporters question during an event with sheriffs in the East Room of the White House in Washington, September 5, 2018.

Outside the courthouse Friday, Breen said Papadopoulos didn't recall ever telling anyone in the campaign about the fact that Russian Federation had dirt on Clinton in the form of emails.

"He didn't come close to the standard of 'substantial assistance, '" prosecutor Andrew Goldstein told the judge at the sentencing hearing.

The lies Mr. Papadopoulos told in his voluntary interview with the Federal Bureau of Investigation on January 27, 2017, prosecutors said, "undermined investigators' ability to challenge the professor or potentially detain or arrest him while he was still in the United States".

Within weeks, he made contact with a mysterious professor, Joseph Mifsud, who touted links to the Kremlin and introduced him to others who ostensibly had connections to Russian President Vladimir Putin - including a woman who claimed to be Putin's niece.

Papadopoulos concluded by saying "this investigation has global implications, and the truth matters". "I know some people will think the sentence is light, some may think that it's heavy". He gave false statements about his contacts to the FBI, which the FBI said impeded their investigation into the extent that Russian meddling may have worked its way into the campaign.

CNN's Tapper noted that Session's attorneys said that Sessions stands by his testimony, and denied encouraging a meeting with Russians. A spokeswoman for Sessions declined to comment after Papadopoulos's filing last week.

"We don't talk politics", he said. A federal court kept his July 2017 arrest secret for more than two months after Mueller's office argued that making it public would "significantly undermine his ability to serve as a proactive cooperator".

While the President had belittled Papadopoulos following his guilty plea last yea, calling him a "low level volunteer", he was actually one of just five foreign policy advisers for Mr. Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign.
