Del Potro: "I'm Excited To Keep Surprising Myself"

From 1,042 to US Open final del Potro relishes return to Grand Slam title match

The 31-year-old defeated Juan Martin del Potro 6-3 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 in the US Open final to claim a third success at Flushing Meadows and make it back-to-back slam titles. Roger Federer leads with 20 Grand Slam titles, and Rafael Nadal shows off 17 in the museum at his academy in Manacor, Spain.

Djokovic, the sixth seed, tamed the Argentine big artillery 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in three hours and 15 minutes, here on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Djokovic has been successful in five of the last six Grand Slam finals he's played dating back to Wimbledon in 2015.

It is the third U.S. Open title of Djokovic's career, and his 14th overall Grand Slam win. He was barking at himself, at his entourage, at a crowd vocally supporting his opponent, Juan Martin del Potro. "It will be in my heart for the rest of my life", Del Potro said.

It came in a final which was business-like rather than thrilling, a relief for a tournament still reeling from the controversial women's final on Saturday. He was earmarked as the next big force, the man alongside Djokovic to rattle the two great champions he had just felled to break through.

While the scoreline suggested a comfortable evening for Djokovic, the Serbian was still made to work hard and had to produce some of his best and most consistent tennis.

"Of course he can". "But couldn't make them because Novak was there nearly every time".

"I was so happy to be playing the final against this magnificent idol", added Del Potro of his close friend Djokovic. "I know that he will be here again with the champions trophy".

"I was hoping [Pete Sampras] was going to be here tonight", Djokovic said during the awards ceremony. "You deserve to win".

6-3 victory under the roof at Arthur Ashe stadium - it was raining in NY - pulled him level with Pete Sampras for third on the all-time men's list.

When Djokovic is in peak health, as he finally is following a long bout with a right elbow injury that eventually required surgery after this year's Australian Open, he is most definitely a man on a mission. Returning the following month he lost back-to-back matches to Taro Daniel and Benoit Paire and his ranking dropped as low as 22.

For Djokovic, it was an illustration of him growing into the championships as he took his run of consecutive sets won to 14, stretching back to the second round against Tennys Sandgren. That put the 29-year-old Argentine back in a Grand Slam final for the first time since his breakthrough nine years ago, a comeback for a guy who had four wrist operations in the interim.

It enabled Djokovic to go on and take the second-set tie-break following four unforced errors from Del Potro's forehand - including one on set point.
