Game of Thrones, Mrs. Maisel triumph at Emmys

Both shows have already picked up some Emmys hardware

Her co-star Alex Borstein, who plays Mrs. Maisel's comedy mentor, set a zany tone by mouthing an obscenity right after she was announced as the supporting actress victor (reacting either to the win or to presenter Tracy Morgan's creative pronunciation of her name) and then showily doffing the top layer of her slinky dress before marching to the stage.

I'll admit it: I was hoping that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau would take the award for his work as Jaime Lannister.

But the ceremony in downtown Los Angeles quickly went off script, with sentimental favorite Matthew Rhys winning the Emmy for best drama actor for spy thriller "The Americans" and Claire Foy earning a statuette for "The Crown". While the FX drama was critically beloved, it hadn't picked up as much traction with the Academy voters through the years.

"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" star was a frontrunner to win, boosted by her Golden Globe win for the role earlier in the year.

Glenn Weiss won the outstanding directing for a variety special and told the audience the prize was "bittersweet" because his mother had died two weeks previously.

Svendsen then joined Weiss on stage as the director got on one knee and formally proposed. But despite having five more actors nominated across the supporting categories (Edgar Ramirez, Ricky Martin and Finn Wittrock for the men; Judith Light and Penelope Cruz for the women), it did not take either of those categories. It's also a history-making moment for RuPaul himself, who won the series and reality host awards this year.

Netflix this year notched a leading 112 Emmy nominations, ahead of HBO and NBC.

Of course, Brosnahan is talking about The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, her hit Amazon Prime comedy that is up for 14 awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. This made her the first woman to win in both categories.
