Google Is Pulling the Plug on Inbox in March 2019

Google is Killing Inbox

Gmail, by comparison, is very busy, even the new version.

Inbox, Google's innovative app for email, has received its death sentence. "As a result, we're planning to focus exclusively on Gmail and say goodbye to "Inbox" at the end of March 2019", Matthew Izatt, Product Manager at Gmail, wrote in a blog post late on Wednesday.

Inbox was a testing ground of sorts for new Gmail features.

Google launched the Inbox in 2014 as a standalone app to exist alongside the Gmail.

Over the years features from Inbox have migrated over to Gmail including smart reply and most recently snoozing. This update brought more of Inbox's features to Gmail, adding to those that had already made their way across. Google was pretty adamant about the future of Inbox saying at that time that there's no reason users should be anxious, as the app is here to stay. Five months later, though, and Google looks to have changed its mind.

For me, Inbox was an attempt to simplify email and while it certainly had some interesting features, Inbox was too simplified and not really usable because of that. Maybe Inbox was doomed from the start, but erase the frustration of Inbox users on this sad day. Inbox would categorize your emails into bundles with the same label. Just another case of Google killing off an app or service, Google giveth and Google taketh.

Google Gmail product manager Matthew Izatt wrote in a blog post that Inbox users can consult an online guide to familiarize themselves with Gmail. However, there is a pretty big following for Inbox, so Google may face some backlash here. In the new Gmail, you'll find workflows that are similar to your favourite ones in Inbox.
