Hurricane Florence strengthens to a Category 3 storm

ABC News

Sunday, Sept. 9, 5:49 pm: Hurricane Florence continues to intensify rapidly as it moves ever closer to the U.S. Atlantic coast, where it could strike somewhere between SC and Virginia late this week.

In the Pacific, Hurricane Olivia is now a Category 1 storm with winds of 75 mph, and is approximately 595 miles east-northeast of Hilo, Hawaii, as of 5 p.m. local time Sunday.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center say Florence is expected to be an extremely unsafe storm by the time it nears the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday.

It warned the storm would be "an extremely unsafe major hurricane" by the time it made landfall, forecast in the Carolinas on Thursday.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper also urged his state's residents to get ready, noting the storm already was generating swelling waves and risky currents along the coast.

Florence was about 580 miles southeast of Bermuda as of 11 a.m. ET Monday.

It is expected to pickup speed, moving between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday and could make landfall possibly as a Category 3 or higher on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, forecasters said.

The third hurricane in the Atlantic, Hurricane Florence, could pose a danger to parts of the U.S.

"There is an increasing risk of two life-threatening impacts from Florence: storm surge at the coast and freshwater flooding from a prolonged heavy rainfall event inland", the NHC said Sunday.

Hurricane Florence on Sunday had winds moving at 75 mph, and was 750 miles southeast of Bermuda, moving west at 6 mph. It was expected to strengthen into a hurricane then weaken by the middle of the week.

Florence became a hurricane Sunday with sustained winds of at least 74 miles per hour.

Many newcomers have moved to the coast in the almost 19 years since the last strong hurricane - Floyd - threatened the area. The state's emergency management agency said it is "preparing for the possibility of a large-scale disaster". Certain areas of Brunswick, Currituck, Dare, Hyde, New Hanover, and Onslow counties are affected, and more orders are expected Tuesday. Hurricane Floyd was a Category 4 storm before it hit Florida, traveled up the coast and struck Cape Fear as a strong Category 2 storm. It is now 1,305 miles east of the Windward Islands, which are in the West Indies, and moving westward at 14 mph.

Far behind Florence is Hurricane Isaac, which had maximum sustained winds at 75 miles per hour (120 kph).

While the track of Tropical Storm Florence is still uncertain, it appears increasingly likely that Virginia may see significant impacts from this storm this week. "We are mobilizing the state's resources to make sure we are prepared, and the people of SC must not hesitate to prepare for the possibility of a hurricane impacting our coast". As NPR's Bill Chappell reported, the town of Mountain View on the Big Island recorded 51.53 inches of rain as a result of Lane, the third-highest total ever measured from a USA storm.

Maximum sustained winds were clocked at 140 miles per hour (220 kph) as it moved west-northwest at 13 miles per hour (20 kph).

"Even that forecast, if it came true, might be dire for North Carolina, since the model predicted that storm would stall out for several days just offshore, dumping massive amounts of rain over coastal North Carolina". (Also important note, a Category 5 Hurricane has never made landfall on North Carolina) Florence is unique however because it's nearly taking a beeline course to the coastline. The storm was moving west at 14 mph (22 kmh) and expected to accelerate over the next 36 hours. Helene is still a Tropical Storm.

Isaac will be near the Lesser Antilles later this week and could bring impacts to parts of the Caribbean Islands during this time frame.
