Thousands evacuated in the Philippines ahead of super typhoon Mangkhut

Mangkhut is heading toward Hong

Mangkhut will be locally named "Ompong" once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Wednesday.

Over the next two days, the typhoon will travel towards Vietnam's northern coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Nam Dinh.

'We are going to evacuate more'. We are preparing our emergency assets and relief items.

Schools and offices are being closed and farmers are racing to save crops.

She said seven million others are at risk in the country, with the typhoon expected to boost the intensity of seasonal monsoon rains that have already caused widespread flooding in central Luzon, a mainly farming region north of capital Manila.

Mangkhut is the 15th storm this year to batter the Philippines, which is hit by about 20 a year and is considered one of the world's most disaster-prone countries. It was tracked on Thursday about 725km away in the Pacific with sustained winds of 205km per hour and gusts of up to 255 kph (158 mph), Philippine forecasters said. About 80 per cent of the USA territory was without power but it was restored by Thursday morning.

It is drawing comparisons with Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated central areas of the archipelago nation in 2013, killing 6,300 people.

Authorities said some 10 million people in the Philippines are in the storm's path, not including millions more in heavily-populated coastal China.

"Hong Kong as of the forecast now will be on the right quadrant of the storm with the greatest impacts from wind, rain and storm surge along that coast line", he said.

'It will bring destruction. Even moderate winds can topple their houses, ' regional civil defence official Dante Balao told AFP. According to HKO, the storm is expected to skirt around 100 to 200 kilometers (62 to 124 miles) south of Hong Kong on Wednesday afternoon, bringing strong winds and rain.

According to the observatory, Mangkhut is forecast to move towards the Philippine island of Luzon on Friday and Saturday.

Social media users and radio commentators in Hong Kong said they were stocking up on food and supplies after the observatory warned residents to prepare for the storm, saying it posed a "considerable threat".

As per the state weather bureau, Mangkhut is likely to threaten Northern Luzon and is expected to cross the Cagayan-Batanes area by Saturday and still remain as a typhoon. He had already ordered schools and government offices to close on September 12.
