United Kingdom economy will shrink without Brexit deal

The former foreign secretary doubled down on his criticism of Mrs May in his weekly Telegraph column on Sunday, saying she was leading Britain toward a "spectacular political vehicle crash".

But the risks are that the PM can not say for certain what the final deal will look like - and some Brexiteers were already determined not to vote for it, she added.

UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn leaves the stage after delivering a speech at Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, May 24, 2018.

Speaking to BBC's Andrew Marr earlier today, he said: "Let me tell you the facts, which are that the police now are preparing for the possibility of civil unrest".

"At the time, he congratulated the Prime Minister for her determination in securing the deal".

Christine Lagarde, the IMF's managing director, added: "Those projections assume a timely deal with the European Union on a broad free trade agreement and a relatively orderly Brexit process after that".

The IMF said there was a "daunting" range of issues still to be dealt with before Brexit.

International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde said Monday that "all the likely Brexit scenarios will have costs for the United Kingdom economy", and a no-deal Brexit "would impose very large costs".

European Union officials and diplomats insist that nothing has fundamentally changed on the so called backstop plan for the Irish border to ensure it remains open for people and commerce after Brexit.

In her Panorama interview, Mrs May said there needed to be "friction-free movement of goods" with no customs or regulatory checks between the United Kingdom and European Union on the island of Ireland, in order to avoid a hard border there.

"There's a difference between those who think you can only be bloody hard in public, and those who think actually you bide your time, and you're bloody hard when the time is right - and when it really matters", she said.

Mrs May has been dogged by claims rebels in her party are seeking to depose in the next six months. However, it is notable that Liam Fox ( the Trade Secretary) and Michael Gove (the Environment Secretary) have both voiced their support for May.

The EU's backstop would leave a border down the Irish sea while the UK's proposal left it "volunteering" to "remain effectively in the customs union and large parts of the single market until Brussels says otherwise", Mr Johnson said.

May will meet EU leaders in Salzburg on Wednesday and Thursday, as she seeks a breakthrough in talks on the Brexit divorce and the future UK-EU trading relationship.

According to a Comres survey, 50% of British adults feel the overall impact will be negative, whereas 41% think it will be positive.

That has led to worries that Britain is heading for a "no-deal Brexit" that would see it revert to World Trade Organisation rules on trade and force it to pay tariffs on goods imported from the EU.

That saying sums up some of the troubles that Theresa May has in negotiating Brexit.

May admitted in a BBC interview to be broadcast on Monday that she gets "irritated" by the debate over her leadership during the hard negotiations.
