Adenovirus: 9th Child Dead In North Jersey

9th child dies in adenovirus outbreak at NJ health facility, Health Department confirms

Adenoviruses frequently cause mild to severe illness with cold-like symptoms, particularly in young children.

The department said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were helping with lab tests and expertise. They are common in places with large groups of children, such as child-care settings, schools and summer camps.

The new diagnosis of adenovirus brings the total number of cases at the rehabilitation centre to 26.

United States health officials have confirmed another case of a virus that has left eight children dead at a paediatric rehabilitation centre.

A staff member at the facility also fell ill during the outbreak, but has since recovered.

The facility has been told not to admit any new patients until the outbreak ends.

The timing of the deaths is not clear.

The first symptoms showed up September 26, and the state was notified of an outbreak October 9, officials said. The seventh death was announced the next day.

Twenty-five pediatric cases of adenovirus have been connected to the outbreak at this facility, officials said.

The nine children who died in the outbreak that began September 26 range in age from toddler to young adult, with majority under age 18.

The children affected were previously described in a health department statement as "medically fragile children with severely compromised immune systems".

The strain of adenovirus is associated with communal living arrangements, it said.

Both the staff at the facility as well as state authorities are continuous in the efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

"The Wanaque Center continues to fully cooperate with these agencies and has sought out their medical guidance with respect to the virus", the facility said.

State health officials said an inspection of the Wanaque Center last weekend found "handwashing deficiencies" and "infection control issues", according to a statement. The Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE) said the shortages may have led to "poor infection control practices".

All nine were in the pediatric unit of the Wanaque Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation in Haskell, Passaic County. Specifically, it was determined that the facility failed to provide a clean and home-like environment for their residents. Some strains also cause diarrhea and conjunctivitis.

The bacterium can cause pneumonia or serious blood or wound infections.
