Anderson into ATP Finals after Vienna Open win over Nishikori

ATP 250- St. Petersburg Open Men's Singles Final match

Big-serving South African Kevin Anderson secured his spot at next month's season-ending ATP Finals by beating Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-3 7-6 (3) to win the Vienna Open on Sunday.

Cape Town - Kevin Anderson has become the first South African player in 23 years to reach the year-end ATP Finals.

Nishikori saved two first set points but lost it on the third when he was unable to deal with a driven backhand.

Kei Nishikori ended top seed Dominic Thiem's Erste Bank Open hopes and boosted his own chances of making the ATP Finals in London.

Anderson joins Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Juan Martin del Potro and Alexander Zverev in qualifying for the ATP Finals, with at least two spots up for grabs in the French capital next week.

The German made in six wins from seven matches with a 7-5 6-3 defeat of Roberto Bautista Agut, and will now face Marius Copil after the Romanian defeated Taylor Fritz 7-6 (8-6) 7-5.

Anderson has a shot at a fifth career title and second of the year after winning in NY in February.

"You've been a world-class player year in and year out so best of luck for the rest of the year", he said. Each of the World No. 8's previous trophy wins - in Johannesburg, Delray Beach, Winston-Salem and NY - came at ATP World Tour 250-level events. "Any time you make a final, you want to put the history behind you and it was always going to be a tough match".

If Nishikori goes on to win his first title since 2016 then he will improve to within 125 points of the eighth and final berth in the ATP's Race to London, with next week's Paris Masters to come. "I couldn't be more pleased to have kept at it and finally broken through at this level". The 32-year-old needed just one championship point to claim victory, landing his 13th ace of the match.
