Federer beats Copil to win 99th career title in Basel

Roger Federer

Roger Federer won the 99th tour-level title of his career on home soil at the Swiss Indoors in Basel on Sunday.

The Swiss now owns nine trophies from his hometown event and has won his last 20 matches at the tournament.

The 37-year-old saved a break point in the first game and, his nerves settled, set about the task of outclassing his opponent with clinical precision to reach his 14th Basel final. "I was able to use my experience today".

The 93rd-ranked Romanian became the first qualifier to reach the Basel final in more than a decade as he upset Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-4.

"This was nearly a turnaround week for me", the Swiss legend said. "I'm happy to win in front of my home crowd". Federer quickly fell behind 3-0 to open the match but clawed back to 5-5 with a break after squandering four previous break points.

After struggling in the second set, Copil recovered and finished the match off with 10 aces in the final set.

World No 11 Nishikori's luckless run means that a win in Memphis in 2016, his second career title, remains his most recent.

Fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan routed local favorite and top-seeded Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals at Vienna, Austria, dispatching him 6-3, 6-1 in just 66 minutes.

"It will be a challenge but I'm excited to see how I feel tomorrow, playing a young guy", said Federer.

Copil again showed his steel with an early break in the second set before Federer made another fightback with an overhead victor to break back in the seventh game. Copil has two after also beating No. 6 Marin Cilic in the second round.

But a run of five consecutive games for Federer maintained the world number three's spectacular run in this competition. He needed 44 minutes to claim the opening set but was brought back to level-pegging as Zverev won the second in a tiebreaker.

Despite being broken twice by world number 93 Copil, Federer was never truly in danger, striking 22 winners and winning 32 out of 34 first-serve points.
