Kavanaugh offers 'special gratitude' to Collins, others at ceremonial swearing

Protestors outside the Supreme Court ahead of Justice Kavanaugh's official swearing-in

US Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh sought to put a bruising confirmation battle behind him on Monday (Oct 8) at a White House ceremony in which President Donald Trump declared him innocent of sexual misconduct and apologised for the heated process.

Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is not impressed with how President Trump conducted himself at last night's ceremony for the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh.

"The Supreme Court is a team of nine and I will always be a team player on the team of nine".

Mr Kavanaugh is expected to push the court further to the right as he is replacing Justice Kennedy, a conservative who sometimes voted with the liberal justices on key social issues including in cases involving abortion and gay rights.

Retired Justice Anthony Kennedy swears in Brett Kavanaugh at the Supreme Court as his wife Ashley holds the Bible.

Last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation completed a report on sexual misconduct allegations against Mr Kavanaugh - but the findings have not been released to the public.

Since justices serve lifetime appointments, the political consequences are likely to last long beyond Trump's administration.

He said all four of the clerks who will work for him at the high court are women.

Christine Blasey Ford, a psychology professor, had told... On Saturday evening, Kavanaugh took his oaths of office in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court while protesters chanted outside the court building.

He called the Kavanaugh row "a disgraceful situation brought about by people who are evil", and said that the result was "very exciting".

The latest justice to join the bench, Neil Gorsuch, spoke a year ago during his swearing-in at the White House Rose Garden. He helped to vet Roberts and Alito when Kavanaugh was working as a lawyer in the White House.

Kavanaugh will hear his first cases on Tuesday, when the court convenes at 10 a.m.

The bitterly divided U.S. Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm Kavanaugh, with just one Democrat supporting him.

Kavanaugh is the second justice Trump has successfully nominated to the Supreme Court, following the confirmation previous year of Neil Gorsuch to the seat left by the late Antonin Scalia. At the time, McConnell said he was blocking Garland because voters "should have a say in the court's direction" on Election Day.

During the swearing-in ceremony at the White House on October 8, Trump apologized to Kavanaugh and his family "for the bad pain and suffering you have been forced to endure". Some Democrats have talked of impeaching Kavanaugh, though the process is hard with a two-thirds Senate majority required to remove a federal judge. "I'll be the first justice in the history of the Supreme Court to have a group of all-women law clerks".

As Kavanaugh won't vote in any cases prior to his tenure, these votes could end in a 4-4 tie, leading to either a reinstatement of the lower court ruling or a retrial with Kavanaugh.

As the newest member of the court, Kavanaugh will take on a few special jobs.

Wednesday - The court will listen to a case made by Navy sailors seeking justice for injuries they received by asbestos exposure. He'll also be the one to answer the door at those meetings if someone knocks to deliver something such as a justice's coffee or forgotten glasses.

"The American public has seen this charade, and it was a disgrace".
