Saudi Arabia calls Khashoggi killing 'grave mistake,' says prince not aware

Think Trump is erratic now? Just wait until after the midterm

Both King Salman and the crown prince called Mr Khashoggi's son on Sunday to express their condolences over his death, the Saudi Press Agency reports.

King Salman expressed his deepest sympathy in a telephone call Sunday to Salah Jamal Khashoggi, the son of the 59-year-old journalist, who died in Istanbul early this month.

Saudi officials maintain that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman knew nothing of the killing.

The kingdom's claim on Saturday that Khashoggi died in a "fistfight" met global skepticism and allegations of a cover-up to absolve the 33-year-old crown prince of direct responsibility.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin said Saudi Arabia's admission that the Washington Post columnist was killed in a fistfight was a "good first step but not enough", though he added it was premature to discuss sanctions against Riyadh.

On Saturday, the Saudi authorities said that Khashoggi died in the course of a "fight" with agents who were trying to interrogate him in the legation.

She said: "I agree with all those who say when it comes to our already limited arms exports to Saudi Arabia, that they can not take place in the current situation".

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday Turkey will reveal the "naked truth" about the dissident journalist's killing, adding he will make a full new statement on the case when he addresses parliament on Tuesday.

Four hours before the killing, al-Madani was seen entering the consulate building beardless, wearing a blue and white checked shirt and dark blue pants but, moments after the incident, al-Madani can be seen wearing what appears to be Khashoggi's own dark blazer, open-collared grey shirt and pants.

"Yes, I think he did it", said Senator Bob Corker.

Turkish authorities believe Khashoggi's killers held him down while his fingers were hacked off and then injected him with a lethal drug before carrying him into another room where he was hoisted onto a conference table and dismembered.

Saudi Arabia so far has not acknowledged or explained Mutreb's presence in Istanbul - nor that of a forensics and autopsy expert, also on hand for Khashoggi's arrival at the consulate.

"I cannot give you a guarantee, because I cannot predict what will happen to other suppliers", Falih said, when asked whether the world can avoid oil hitting $100 per barrel again.

Khashoggi vanished after entering the consulate to obtain documents for his upcoming marriage.

Jubeir, the Saudi foreign minister, had extended condolences to Khashoggi's family earlier on Sunday. "This was an operation where individuals ended up exceeding the authorities and responsibilities they had", Jubeirtold Fox.

Turkish authorities nearly immediately concluded that Khashoggi was targeted by a 15-man squad of Saudi agents who killed and dismembered him in the diplomatic mission.

"I agree with all those who say when it comes to our already limited arms exports (to Saudi Arabia) that they can not take place in the current situation", she told reporters at her party headquarters. But in an interview with The Post late Saturday, Trump conceded that there had been "deception".

For Saudi Arabia's allies - particularly in the West - the question will be whether they believe that the prince, who has painted himself as a reformer, has any culpability.

Paul said that he doesn't believe that "arms should ever be seen as a jobs program", adding that the Saudis are using USA arms in the war in Yemen where civilians are being killed.

Merkel reiterated that she condemned Khashoggi's killing "in the strongest terms" and saw an "urgent need to clear up" the case.
