Saudi Hollywood deal hit by Khashoggi disappearance

Saudi Arabia government pledges ‘greater action’ if US retaliates for Khashoggi disappearance

President Trump has dispatched his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Saudi Arabia to look into the disappearance of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Khashoggi, a United States resident and a Riyadh critic columnist at The Washington Post, vanished after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago to get marriage documents. On Monday morning, President Trump offered a hand, telling reporters that, after speaking with King Salman about Khashoggi's death, "It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers - who knows".

The family of missing activist Jamal Khashoggi said Monday they're following the news of the writer, who disappeared in Saudi Arabia on October 2.

"Been hearing the ridiculous "rogue killers" theory was where the Saudis would go with this", Sen.

Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia in 2017 as Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman increased crack downs on dissidents, writing for Al-Jazeera, the Washington Post, and other global news outlets.

But privately, others are now questioning whether the 33-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, the man once hailed as a visionary saviour of Saudi Arabia, has gone too far.

The New York Times claims an unnamed source said the Saudi royal family's crown prince approved interrogation or rendition of the dissident Mr Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia.

Turkish officials believe Mr Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi agents but Riyadh has always strongly denied this.

Trump dispatched Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to meet King Salman over the case that has strained the Americans' relationship with the Saudis, carefully cultivated by the US president.

Reporters waiting outside the consulate in Istanbul's Levent district said early October 16 that Turkish crime scene investigators turned off all the lights and surveyed the interior of the Saudi consulate with a special blue light used in forensics probes.

King Salman and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan spoke by telephone on Sunday evening and stressed the importance of the two countries creating a joint group as part of the probe.

Saudi Arabia unapologetically flogs, imprisons - and occasionally, crucifies - people for committing the crime of "homosexual intercourse". "But we want to find out what happened and he's got instructions to find out what happened".

Khashoggi, 59, disappeared earlier this month after he entered the Saudi Consulate to obtain documents related to his upcoming marriage to a Turkish woman.

Officially entitled the Future Finance Initiative, the Saudi conference describes itself as an "international platform for expert-led debate between investors, innovators and governments as well as economic leaders".

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he still plans to attend but would "take (it) into account" if more information came out. European allies have urged "a credible investigation" and accountability for those responsible. "Those bearing responsibility for the disappearance of Mr. Khashoggi must be held to account".

Khashoggi, a familiar face on Arab talk shows, moved to Washington past year fearing retribution for his criticism of Prince Mohammed, who has cracked down on dissent with arrests. Several organisations and individuals have announced that they will not attend the mega summit in Saudi Arabia as a mark of protest.

Prince Mohammed has aggressively pitched the kingdom as a destination for foreign investment.
