Theresa May to tell conference

Ms May has shown little sign of moving away from her so-called Chequers plan, but after trying to display unity over Brexit at her party's annual conference in the city of Birmingham, Mr Johnson looked to have shattered those attempts.

Tory MP James Duddridge has handed in a letter of no confidence against May, citing the prime minister's refusal to "rip up" her controversial Chequers agreement, and her rival Boris Johnson's "inspirational" speech, as his reasons behind the decision.

Speaking at a fringe meeting hosted by the ConservativeHome website, Mr Johnson will say: "We must on no account follow Corbyn, and start to treat capitalism as a kind of boo word".

Mr Johnson said: "If we cheat the electorate - and Chequers is a cheat - we will escalate the sense of mistrust".

Johnson also set out a way to fight the Labour leader, who solidified the socialist takeover of the Labour party at the opposition's conference in Liverpool last week, pledging lower taxes and a free-market economy that gives people a stake in the country's future and control over their day-to-day life.

Mr Johnson's demand for the PM to "chuck Chequers" has echoed around the corridors and fringe meetings at a gathering riven by profound differences over the best approach to Britain's European Union withdrawal.

Mr Johnson will also use his speech to issue a clarion call to activists to "believe in Conservative values".

"And that means, instead of aping Corbyn, we have to take our basic Conservative ideas and fit them to the problems of today".

Questioned again later on BBC Radio 4's Today about how she felt that her former colleague appeared to be mocking her, she replied: "What I feel is that I, and this government, and this party, are getting on with the important job. of getting a good deal for the United Kingdom when we leave the European Union". "That is not what we voted for", he said.

"He's too volatile", said Alison Jolley, a party member from just outside Birmingham who cheered loudly for Mr. Johnson during his speech and laughed uproariously at his jokes.

Hard Brexit backers - led by former foreign secretary Boris Johnson - consider the plan a sellout of Brexit because it keeps Britain tied to the EU.

Boris Johnson wants to delay Brexit by six months if he becomes Prime Minister.

Mrs May said that "Boris always puts on a good show", but pointedly noted that he was "a key part" of the discussions at her country residence which ended with the plan being agreed in July.

Some of Johnson's supporters, while welcoming his speech, said they believed now was not the time to launch a leadership bid against May. "No, because I think we probably can't have the self-indulgence of a leadership challenge".

"He is absolutely right about the threat that Chequers poses to our democracy, our country and ultimately the fortunes of the Conservative Party if we stick with it", Andrew Bridgen, a Conservative lawmaker, said.

And he contrasted the "real excitement" at Mr Johnson's fringe speech with the "empty" main conference hall.
