USA and China have 'fundamental disagreements', says Mike Pompeo

Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump shake hands during their historic summit in Singapore back in June

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is expected to visit Russian Federation soon, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Monday (Oct 8).

Tight North Korean security left US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo literally unarmed during his trip to Pyongyang.

Trump met Kim in Singapore in June for the first-ever summit between the two countries, resulting in what critics say was only a vague commitment by Kim towards denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. DPRK is the acronym for the country's official name: Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Trump met with Kim in Singapore in June and - at the time - announced that the two countries are set to "start a new history".

"There was an exchange of stands of the top leaderships of the two countries on the issues arising in holding the second DPRK-US summit talks to be followed by an in-depth discussion of them", the KCNA said.

Pompeo said he and Kim had gotten "pretty close" to fixing the logistics for the summit but stressed that "sometimes that last inch is hard to close".

"Yeah, so we had a great, great visit this morning", Pompeo replied.

The comments come as Pompeo completes a whirlwind diplomatic tour of Asia, visiting North Korea, South Korea and China over three days.

North Korea has called on the United States to actively engage in talks on declaring an end to the Korean War, which was halted in 1953 with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

Pompeo also visited Japan and South Korea, where he said Monday in Seoul that there had been "significant progress" toward an agreement for the North to give up its nuclear weapons.

In a summit in April, the leaders of South and North Korea agreed to cooperate in declaring an end to the war this year, saying that they will seek multilateral talks involving the United States and possibly China.

Specifically, Pompeo revealed that North Korea agreed to allow worldwide inspectors to survey their nuclear and missile testing sites.

Mr Moon spoke of the imminent travel plans of the North Korean and Chinese leaders during a Cabinet meeting a day after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo travelled to North Korea, but did not elaborate further.

Pompeo also discussed additional denuclearization steps that the reclusive regime can take, as well as Washington's monitoring of the verification process and "corresponding measures", according to the presidential office.

The North Korean leader also invited inspectors to visit the Punggye-ri nuclear test facility, which Pyongyang took apart in May, "to confirm that it has been irreversibly dismantled", the State Department said.

Pompeo was hit by North Korean officials a few months ago as having a "gangster-like demand for denuclearization".

Mr Pompeo told reporters in Pyongyang the two "had a great, great visit" and that Mr Trump sent his regards.

Moon also said there was a possibility of Kim holding a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
