CLOSER AND CLOSER: Another 'Never Nancy' Democrat FLIPS for Pelosi

While she needs only a simple majority to be nominated for speaker this week by the Democratic Caucus, Pelosi must win a majority to be formally elected on the House floor January 3, meaning she could afford to lose only 15 Democrats if all lawmakers were present and voting and no Republicans supported her.

Democratic Rep. -elect Sharice Davids plans to cast one of her first votes for Nancy Pelosi as House speaker, saying Kansans didn't elect her to go to Washington "to play political games and take symbolic protest votes".

As the rules now stand, Pelosi only needs to win the support of a simple majority in her caucus -118 votes - to secure the party's nomination for Speaker when the 116th Congress takes its first vote on January 3 next year.

"I'm talking about scores of members of Congress who just gave me a vote, are giving me a vote of confidence", Pelosi told reporters on Capitol Hill during a break from the closed-door caucus. Are there dissenters? Yes. "We remain united behind our goal of new leadership and intend to vote against Leader Pelosi in Caucus and on the Floor of the House".

However, after the caucus vote, Pelosi indicated that she thinks she'll get the backing she needs in January's vote. Most other members of the state's all-Democratic delegation support Pelosi, including fellow incoming Rep. Lori Trahan.

Pelosi was the first female speaker in US history and is attempting the rare feat of securing the speaker's gavel for a nonconsecutive term.

With at least 233 Democrats joining Pelosi in the next House majority (one race remains undecided), she can only afford to lose the support of 16 Democratic colleagues.

Heading into the internal vote, Pelosi had faced the most serious challenge of her leadership tenure.

Pelosi will face a floor vote on January 3, when she must get a majority of the whole House, 218 votes.

The House speaker sets the chamber's legislative agenda and is second, behind the vice president, in the line of succession to the president. "In addition, there are several incumbents who have never supported her or insist on voting against her on the floor no matter what".

Every Congress, each member will be allowed to introduce one bill for debate and a vote on a committee on which he/she serves. "And she has shown her willingness to be out front on Democratic priorities, like addressing the opioid epidemic and gun safety, where it is clear the American people are demanding action", said Tsongas, who is retiring at the end of the year. Tim Ryan (Ohio), Seth Moulton (Mass.) and Kathleen Rice (N.Y.) ― met privately with Pelosi on Wednesday afternoon, and there's some talk that a key number of the anti-Pelosi Democrats would support her if she promised to make this her last term.

Some members of that group emerged from a meeting with Pelosi on Wednesday declaring themselves unmoved and still unwilling to back her.

"The battle is the floor", said Rep. Linda Sanchez of California, among those who signed a letter calling for new leadership.

She and the Democratic leadership would have the power to block Republican legislation, hamstringing large parts of Trump's agenda ranging from proposed new tax cuts to construction of a wall on the border with Mexico. "Unfortunately, our concerns were dismissed outright", said Democrat Kathleen Rice of NY.
