Donald Trump is being heavily criticised for tweeting out a "racist" video

Trump Tweets Willie Horton-Like Anti-Immigration Ad

Some Republican operatives worry that President Donald Trump's recent immigration crusade, while red meat to his base, is alienating suburban women and other swing voters absolutely crucial to the GOP retaining control of the House. He then reportedly returned to the United States in 2001, was deported, then returned again in 2002, all during Republican George W. Bush's administration. The campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"Illegal immigrant, Luis Bracamontes, killed our people!", the video states, adding, "Democrats let him into our country".

The president says it's just an ad about a "bad guy" who twice entered the country illegally and committed crimes.

"They're dead. I don't regret that", the sneering Bracamontes says in the courtroom as "Democrats let him stay" flashes on the screen. It includes scenes of a migrant caravan moving toward the US, warning ominously, "Who else would Democrats let in?" and suggesting that more violence would soon penetrate the border.

Some Democrats, including Robert Reich, who served as secretary of labour in the Clinton administration, compared the spot to the 1988 "Willie Horton" ad, which supporters of Republican then-candidate George H.W. Bush used to great effect against Democratic rival Michael Dukakis.

The whole advert centered around William Horton, an African American man who in 1987, raped a white woman and stabbed her white fiancé, after he was released on a weekend furlough from the MA prison where he was serving his life sentence.

As Massachusetts governor, Mr Dukakis supported the furlough program.

"This is a sickening ad. Republicans everywhere should denounce it", US Senator Jeff Flake, one of Trump's most prominent Republican critics, said on Twitter Thursday.

But Bracamontes was first deported during the Clinton administration and later slipped back into the USA during the George W. Bush administration, according to federal documents obtained by the Sacramento Bee. And Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., seeking re-election in a Democratic-leaning South Florida district, said he'd not seen the video but criticized Trump's use of it.

Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, called the new ad the "dog whistle of all dog whistles". "This is fear-mongering". "This ad, and your full approval of it, will condemn you and your bigoted legacy forever in the annals of America's history books".
