England's Farrell escapes citing for shoulder-led tackle

Steven Kitshoff is a 'big biltong-eating monster'

Owen Farrell's contentious tackle still has tongues wagging in the rugby world and one former top referee believes South Africa should have been awarded a potentially match-winning penalty in the Twickenham test on Saturday (Sunday NZ time).

World Rugby said there were no citings arising from the test following reviews, or from the Wales-Scotland and Ireland-Italy matches on Saturday.

South Africa were well on top, but Malcolm Marx let England off the hook with a poor throw from a line-out and Farrell levelled expertly from the tee against the run of play before Itoje returned to the fray.

The Bulls playmaker hit the post from a late penalty and almost had another chance to win the game after Owen Farrell had tackled Andre Esterhuizen with his shoulder first.

The Australian official decided Farrell's tackle was legal, however, to deny South Africa a kickable penalty that would have won the game.

"The most important thing is what we do next", Jones answered.

'It's like everything - when you're selecting a national team, there's a whole lot of good players that don't quite make it.

'I just think the game is getting more intense.

"Tom injured his ankle and we don't know how long he'll be".

Former Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll said the referee got the decision "spot on" while former Australia lock Justin Harrison said "just because you don't wrap doesn't mean it a shoulder charge, when laws of physics mean it's a bounce effect".

England have not played reigning world champions New Zealand since 2014 and next week's showdown has been eagerly anticipated ahead of next year's World Cup in Japan.

"It was a good Test match".

Asked if such moves are generally respected within the sport, Foster said: 'I don't know; I think everyone's going to have mixed opinions on that.
