Fight Between Passenger And Bus Driver Leads to Crash, 15 Die

Footage shows fight between driver and passenger before bus crashes off bridge in China

Chongqing police say the female passenger was hitting the driver because she was upset after missing her stop.

During the fight, Ran lost control of the bus and the vehicle broke through a guardrail and plunged into the river with an estimated 15 passengers on board in Wanzhou, Chongqing.

The first half is surveillance footage from the bus.

Zhao Hu, a lawyer, said the family of the victims on the bus have the right to seek compensation from the bus operator and the family of the woman that fought with the driver.

The 42-year-old driver, surnamed Ran, told her to get off at an earlier stop.

As the quarrel escalated the woman hit the driver on the head with her smartphone, the statement added.

The bus was travelling at a speed of 51 kmph (31 mph) at the time of the accident, police said, adding that the investigation has ruled out any mechanical failure as a cause of the accident.

Due to the loss of control of the bus, which was travelling on a bridge in China, the bus swerved widely and hit a vehicle before crashing through the bridge railing and plunging around 160 feet (that's just just 20 feet shorter than the recently-inaugurated Statue of Unity, by the way) into the river.

The wreck was pulled out of the river on Wednesday night by a floating crane.

In response, the driver takes a hand off the steering wheel and grapples with the woman for a couple of seconds.

"The behaviour of both the passenger and driver has severely endangered the safety of all other passengers and has violated the law, ' police said, adding the tragedy served as an 'extremely painful lesson". A total of 13 bodies were retrieved and identified by Thursday, while two others remain missing.
