General Motors to slash 14,000 jobs in North America

Donald Trump’s victories in Ohio and Michigan—places where General Motors will shut shop—helped seal his electoral vote total and the presidency

Mr Trump separately told the Wall Street Journal that GM should stop making cars in China and make them in the United States instead.

Since then, a quarterly sales report continued to show declining sales numbers for the Lordstown built Chevy Cruze.

The closure of the Oshawa Assembly Plant is part of a shift in the company's global production and has nothing to do with the new U.S. -Mexico-Canada trade agreement, a source familiar with the situation told The Canadian Press Sunday.

Union representatives haven't given up hope that Oshawa GM jobs can be saved. "They are not closing our damn plant without one hell of a fight". Wall Street cheered the actions, while U.S. and Canadian leaders expressed outrage.

"The actions we are taking today continue our transformation to be highly agile, resilient and profitable, while giving us the flexibility to invest in the future", said GM chairman and chief executive Mary Barra.

The job cuts from GM's current 180,000-strong work force will be particularly stinging in politically crucial areas of OH and MI, a region US President Donald Trump has promised to revive.

Ford, who is scheduled to address the issue in a media availability later Monday, expressed his concerns for the well being not only of GM workers, but the thousands employed in the broader supply change and also in local businesses that depend on these customers.

The Associated Press reports that more than 14,500 jobs will be lost in North America.

Shares of GM, the largest automaker in the USA which sells the Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC brands, rose almost 6 percent on the news to $37.98 in Monday afternoon trading.

U.S. Senator Rob Portman, a Republican from OH, said he's "deeply frustrated" with GM's decision to shut down a plant in Lordstown and is pressing Barra to come up with an alternative product for the factory.

The Oshawa plant, however, has been producing an older model, she said.

She said the firm was making the changes "to get in front of it while the company is strong and while the economy is strong".

The company's main competitor, Ford, said earlier this month that it would reduce its salaried workforce by the second quarter of 2019.

He said he told Ms. Barra that GM should stop making cars in China and open a new plant in OH to replace the facility targeted for closing.

It was expected that GM, which announced the overhaul Monday, needed to address underutilization of its plants.

Chiodo points out GM has yet to officially announce a plant closure - just that there will be no product.

General Motors says it plans to cease production of some models at three vehicle assembly plants in the US and Canada in 2019. "GM's production decisions, in light of employee concessions during the economic downturn and a taxpayer bailout from bankruptcy, puts profits before the working families of this country whose personal sacrifices stood with GM during those dark days". The plant is used to make the Cadillac XTS and Chevrolet Impala sedans as well as the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks.

The plan may signal the demise in the US of several passenger cars that have been struggling, including the Chevrolet Cruze, the Chevrolet Impala and the Cadillac XTS.

The Lordstown, Ohio, plant could also go, with GM's boss saying the factory's production of the Chevrolet Cruze would stop on 1 March.
