Huawei Faces Further Heat From US Administration

US presses allies to ditch Huawei citing cybersecurity risks from China – report

The United States government is contacting key allies to get them to persuade telecommunications companies in their countries to avoid using equipment from China's Huawei Technologies Co., the Wall Street Journal reported.

USA officials have been discussing cybersecurity risks in particular with Germany, Italy and Japan - countries that already see wide use of that company's products.

According to WSJ, Washington is especially concerned about the use of Huawei technologies in the countries that host American military bases. The US may boost aid for telecommunications development in countries that shun Huawei equipment, some of the people said.

It is noted that the relevant talks, us officials are politicians and heads of large companies in Germany, Italy and Japan.

Americans have been told repeatedly to steer clear of Chinese-made Huawei and ZTE branded smartphones - intelligence officials and lawmakers share grave doubts over the opaque intentions of such firms and their cozy relationships with the Chinese government.

The White House is said to believe that Beijing could be conducting cyberattacks and espionage using telecom equipment from Chinese firms, including Huawei. According to The Wall Street Journal, the US government briefed its foreign allies on cybersecurity threats allegedly posed by Huawei's products.

5G introduces new security vulnerabilities, partly because of the sheer number of devices that will be connected to 5G networks, but also because the way it handles network interconnections will - experts have warned - make spying easier. "If a government's behavior extends beyond its jurisdiction, such activity should not be encouraged".

Scrutiny of Huawei has increased since Donald J. Trump became USA president as trade tensions between Washington and Beijing escalate.

According to the report, the usa government is now requesting from its allies that they stop using Huawei products as well.

"Huawei is trusted by governments and customers in 170 countries worldwide and poses no greater cybersecurity risk than any ICT vendor, sharing as we do common global supply chains and production capabilities".
