Khashoggi's fiancée asks Trump to press Saudis for his body

The Latest: Turkey's Erdogan: Saudi slaying ordered by govt

Within days of the mysterious disappearance Turkish officials had made anonymous leaks to the media about the killing of the journalist, a harsh critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

During the call with President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and national security adviser John Bolton, Prince Mohammed said Khashoggi had been a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Islamist organisation, the Washington Post reports.

The Turkish president said he did not believe that Saudi King Salman had ordered the killing.

Instead, the White House "has joined governments around the region in weighing what effect the stigma of the Khashoggi killing may have on the crown prince's ability to rule, and what benefit can be extracted from his potential weakness", the Times said, quoting people familiar with the administration's deliberations.

"We knew that Khashoggi's body was dismembered", United Kingdom daily The Independent quoted Aktay as saying.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said it could be several weeks before the USA responds to the killing of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi.

"Everybody is milking this", said Maha Yahya, director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut.

Saudi Arabia's chief prosecutor, Saud al-Mojeb, neither provided the location of Khashoggi's body nor identified a Turkish conspirator when he visited Istanbul this week, a second senior Turkish official told The Post.

Saudi Arabia's consulate is pictured from a skyscraper in Istanbul's Levent district, Turkey.

The journalist's family told the Post in response: "Jamal Khashoggi was not a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. To claim otherwise would be ridiculous".

Istanbul's chief prosecutor announced Wednesday that Khashoggi was strangled immediately after he entered and that his body was dismembered and removed from the consulate.

"Jamal Khashoggi was not a unsafe person in any way possible". A critic of the Saudi royal family, Khashoggi had been living in exile in the United States.

Khashoggi's fiancee Hatice Cengiz, who waited outside the consulate as the journalist entered to obtain documents for their upcoming marriage, said what was done to his body was "brutal, barbaric and ruthless".

"Though Riyadh has detained 18 suspects, it is deeply concerning that no action has been taken against the Saudi consul general, who lied through his teeth to the media and fled Turkey shortly afterward", Erdogan's op-ed continues.

The attempt to criticise Khashoggi in private stands in contrast to the Saudi government's later public statements decrying his death as a "terrible mistake" and "terrible tragedy", the sources said. With this tragedy, the Trump administration has taken a position that is devoid of moral foundation.
